Today was opening day for this new B&N. This is a smaller location but given the compact footprint, a very impressive use of the space.
There's no café/Starbucks inside and thus not as much seating as full-size B&N but don't expect this to be a problem other than peak business times, if that.
It's a little tight in places since it's such a compact square footage, but still a good job with the space. There is an edited-down magazine section, a sweet small children's section, and many of the sections neatly arranged into almost "rooms" for browsing. There is a small but well curated selection of vinyl, music (including Korean), and DVDs, mostly Criterion.
It was a little on the warm side in the store on this August day, but the building has large, high windows at the front facing west, and it was opening day when I expect there were many bodies and much body heat in the space, so this could be something that will resolve itself as they figure out the thermostat and settings. (Also, both sets of front doors were open, which I doubt will be the case beyond opening day.)
The only potential issue I could foresee was the restrooms. There are only two single occupancy restrooms. Nice for all purpose-low traffic, but could run into problems on story time Saturdays with lots of kids and babies at the same time. Fortunately, businesses are next door with restrooms.
The biggest sticky situation is the parking. It's an already awkwardly sized parking lot shared with a Trader Joe's, Container Store, and other small shops on the other side, with this retail space typically being used for a type of shopping that isn't high traffic. Parking can be tricky. Think similar to nearby Saddle Creek with lots of small storefronts close together and long interior retail space. (It's laid out like a shopping trip you park in one place then walk and shop each store. Also probably not typically too much of a problem but I'm wary to see it at the holidays.)
They have a selection of Paper Source and other stationery, beautiful journals, bookish gifts, and seasonal fun things. The merchandising is very attractive and well thought-out. New books are sorted by non-fiction on one side, fiction on the wall opposite. There is a local touch with the Bookseller Favorites, highlighting categories like Southern Fiction, Black Voices, Modern Classics, and Narrative Non-Fiction. Unique game and puzzle selection, including highlights of toys and activities for kids. I was impressed by the STEM kits on hand. Kids section has a magical feel with a book train to sit and read in, several colorful blocks seating, and a Lego Duplo table!
Overall, this store makes for a less overwhelming experience for kids and adults alike, perhaps forecasting fewer meltdowns when faced with intimidating volume of choices (!). The readers/shoppers who need niche books further than the offering here can go to one of the other full-size B&N locations, or booksellers can order a title for you with no fee. The store, staff, and inventory were ready to go from day one, and it's off to a great start as the closest B&N to city limits. It's a lean, clean, slick bookstore with cozy nooks and well...

I could be wrong but it seemed like the fantasy and sci fi section was larger in this store than the others. Super happy it’s...
