So I went on the new sea angler cause it was sold as a combo trip. Rock/ling cod and salmon. Captain Rick made sure to take everybody's bait money for rockfish bait (squid) and we never fished for rockfish at all. The squid was never even unboxed, let alone "cut" Of course no refunds... we salmon fished all day. Never changing tactics, I'll give it to the deck hands. Dana and Mason were great. Captain Rick is a fraud as far as I'm concerned. If you read the website it says all included. That's b.s. you will he charged for everything and anything. For instance, when the rookie next to you snags you up and the deckhands do their best to free up the snag but lose the rig in the process guess who's gonna be paying $11 to get back in the water? You guessed it, YOU! $8 for a weight and $3 for a leader that you better not get too twisted up. Rick preached on and on about presentation of bait to the fish, but they will let you run some nasty looking leaders which didn't make sense to me. On a salmon charter boat you would be supplied with 2 weights to start off with. Rick gives you one in the purchase of "bait" which you might not even get to use. If you want to hear a lot, and I mean A LOT of repetitive jargon about how great Rick is, he will be happy to tell you over and over. Trust me. Seems like a self esteem issue to me. I could have went on a salmon boat if I wanted to salmon fish all day, but I took the captains advice on how great of an experience I would have on his boat as opposed to any other boat. Rick should quit fishing and be a used car salesman, cause that's the experience I got. If you want to fish for rock fish/cod go to emeryville and do the new sea wolf. If you wanna salmon fish do Berkeley new easy rider. I've fished those boats and it was like Disneyland on the ocean. Not like going to a used car lot with a greasy salesman that wants to...
Read moreI would rate my experience less that 1 Star on Saturday, October 13, 2018. The boat was grossly overbooked with more than 50 people. I'll admit I had not been fishing on S.F. Bay Area Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessels for many years, but this experience was the absolute worst I have ever experienced. Captain Rick Powers bragged about his was the only boat that fished both salmon and rockfish in the Bay Area, then told us we were just going after rockfish and ling cod because salmon season was over. It was telling that in his Monday (Oct 15) fishing report he included 6 salmon. Note that Captain Powers does not post fishing reports for weekend trips because the boat is so grossly over-booked (the website states the boat capacity is 40). There is no way 50 + anglers could fish salmon, it would have been more of mess than it was just fishing rockfish. The New Sea Angler may have been appropriately named when it was new in 1977, but it's showing it's age and needs to go into the yard for a major refit. The boat was poorly organized with boxes of stuff living behind the counter in the cabin - the overall appearance was once of disfunction and disorganization. We "fished" for about 6 hours. Captain Powers stayed on the PA system "encouraging" use to frequently make a "fresh drop" to reset our lines - and not to stay on the bottom any longer that 3-4 minutes - all this to minimize tangling up the lines - but the real problem was there were just way too many anglers aboard the boat! Yes everyone had a bag limit of rockfish by the end of the day and some scored ling cod. I spent a quarter of my time aboard fishing and other three quarters untangling lines. This was not the fishing experience I was hoping for and I will not be a repeat customer on the NEW...
Read moreIt was the worst trip I've ever been on and the most expensive at 130 without gear or bait. Nevertheless the captain is I'm love with himself he is the best at everything and he is the pioneer of many fishing styles. And he has the biggest and baddest boat on the water, and he also "fishes rough water" . Oh and he does not give refunds just rain checks. I can tell u one thing he does not fish rough water he takes u out on a new hour boat ride to tell u the weather is too rough to fish, meanwhile he has your money and u go home with nothing. If u like to blow money and listen to someone toot his own horn and come home with no fish or crab. Book a trip with captain rick powers. ... I wish I can gI've him no star but it's...
