In May 2023, I was dealing with a significant medical condition that severely impacted my ability to function. During this challenging time, I required assistance from the police for mental health counseling services. Officer Justin (last name unknown) and his partner were the responding officers.
Unfortunately, their response left me feeling deeply unsupported. Rather than taking the time to understand the complexities of my medical condition and the challenges it presented, they seemed dismissive and lacked empathy. Instead of offering constructive support, they made oversimplified comments like, 'You didn’t want to have this condition,' failing to recognize how it made everyday tasks far more difficult for me.
During the interaction, Justin asked where I went to college and then suggested I should have lived there. This remark showed a lack of awareness about my circumstances, as I was attending Rutgers during the pandemic while managing serious health challenges. His comment disregarded the unique difficulties I faced and made me feel unheard and misunderstood.
Despite being judged throughout my life, I have worked hard to achieve significant milestones. I have been a guest speaker at numerous events, worked with prestigious organizations like NASA, MIT, Johns Hopkins, and Cornell, and was honored as an NSF award winner. Yet, when my medical condition took over, I struggled to function and live up to my potential. Rather than acknowledging these struggles, Justin and his partner made assumptions that minimized the reality of my situation.
I sincerely hope that no one else in my position experiences the same treatment. Their lack of understanding of human psychology and the challenges faced by individuals with medical conditions was evident. I believe these officers would greatly benefit from additional training in empathy, active listening, and mental health awareness. If they are unable to meet these standards, their roles in law enforcement should be reevaluated.
Now, a year later, I have fully recovered and am working as an engineer, contributing to society through my work and startups. Reflecting on this experience, I hope law enforcement agencies take steps to ensure better support and understanding for those dealing with medical and mental health challenges. Everyone deserves to feel heard and respected, especially during their most vulnerable moments. It is clear in my opinion that these 2 officers never had to work hard in there life and took the easy way out picking police path and never had to suffer with a medical condition in there life nor make me feel heard. A lot of cops lack mental health skills and this role should never be assigned to police officers. They only took the easy side to listen to because no cops ever hear me tel health victims who are vulnerable out. Hamilton truly has the worst below average police dept and I would give it more bad reviews. This police dept should...
Read moreIt’s never a surprise when you receive competent caring treatment and investigation from the Hamilton Township Police Department. Today I had the pleasure of meeting with our officers, Brandon and Roman, who might consider to be outstanding police officers, likely the best I’ve ever met. It was really comforting when they allowed me to tell my lengthy story and they listened intently, and I felt absolutely certain that anything that might be needed in the future the Hamilton Township Police Department will be there to assist me or take care of the matter, especially with officers like Brandon and Roman. I just can’t say enough about these two police officers except that as a Hamilton Township resident , I’m glad these officers are part of the force that...
