This establishment was once the home of the chain entertainment store Hastings, but after Hastings closed, EntertainMART rescued the nerds of Ogden and continued providing all our entertainment needs. EntertainMART has been settled in for a few years now, and I feel like overall the feeling and atmosphere feels no different than when it was our beloved Hastings. Once you step in, you can just take a deep breath and realize right of the bat that you are in nerd heaven.
Some of the most noteworthy improvements are that all DVDs are available to rent or purchase, so there's no confusion on which area is rental and which area is not, because it's all the same.
The manga & anime section has expanded and provides a plethora of genres. There always seems to be something new. The video game section is a maze worth delving into since it takes up a major portion of the store space. There is a mixture of used and new games and you'll almost always find a good deal in there. They have a cabinet of rare and hard to find games that I always take a peak at (someday I will get Skies of Arcadia, I just know it!)
Also worth exploring is their comics section, vinyl records, and their book section. There is also a small but mighty roleplaying shelf with campaigns for Dungeons and Dragons, Forgotten Realms and other roleplaying games.
There is a small cafe just in case exploring the wondrous nooks and crannies leaves you feeling parched and weary. No good adventurer would waste an opportunity to take a short rest.
Most - if not all - of the staff is so friendly. I've had a handful of conversations with some where they always give me great suggestions on new movies, games or books to try out. Many of them are just as - if not more - passionate about what's being sold here and it's great to interact with them.
There really is so much offered here, I guarantee that if you are a fan of anything, you will find something to love here.
As a regular customer, I do see small opportunities for improvement - the major one being the quality of signs. As someone who works in design, it irks me to see cluttered, low quality signs that look like they were designed with 2007 WordArt. With this space being such a cornucopia of so many things, I'd love to see the signs meet the caliber and quality it needs to not only provide good information, but also to emphasize just how good this...
Read moreVery out of touch. I asked about a standard 3.5mm cable for headphones. I explained your switch, steam deck, cell phone, etc. Use this cable. I tried to explain its a extremely simple thing. "Have you ever plugged headphones into a cell phone? A CD player?". But...😒
RESPONSE: "We don't have Nintendo switch headphone cables. I drove over to Walmart. Took me 14 seconds. Pic from Walmart.
It's rather sad to see what used to be a good, fun business turn into this. When I was a kid, this was a store under a different name. I'm not exactly sure how this place makes money. I wouldn't recommend trading anything in for credit. They are brutal.
They do sell a lot of dvd's and Blu rays. A LOT of stuff like posters, big bobblehead thingies, Frisby golf, swords, knifes, trading cards.
Video game prices are maybe $7 - $20 more than ebay. Whether new or used. But you don't have to pay for shipping. So, up to you.
DVD's are basically the same price as renting through a streaming service. So I'm getting a dvd collection again. Lol.
New and used books. Pretty good selection and nice to have a physical bookstore close. Comic books, graphic novels, little nic nacs like shirts and fidget hand toys.
They have music. Records and Cd's. I actually asked about SACD once. They didn't know what it was until I explained it was. They said they don't account for that when cataloging music. And that's fair. SACD (Super audio CD) is niche.
For quite some time they had a coffee shop attached. Good drinks and coffee. But it has since closed off that portion and it appears to now be a Soda shop with only an outdoor entrance.
Go check it out on your own.
EDIT: Entertainmart is part of a bigger brand known as Vintage Stock.
EDIT EDIT: They had a whole bunch of 3.5mm aux cables right next to the cash register today. This is interesting. These guys must have seen my popular review about how they are out of touch and not knowing what a 3.5mm jack was a big part of it.
EDIT EDIT EDIT: I tried to trade in some new switch games towards a ps5. I had 12 un opened games. They informed me they do not accept new games. They said they will open it, accept it as used....THEN TURN AROUND AND SELL AS NEW...that's SUPER DUPER SHADY. They then went on to tell me they give 10% of msrp. So they offered me next to nothing. Talking about $7 in credit for a game they will sell for...$70. ...
Read moreIts a Geek's paradise. The staff are knowledgeable about the products they sell and are very helpful. It isn't just used games and comics - they have an entire library in the left-most section of the store.
It is very refreshing when you walk in. Spacious and calming. But, the layout of the store changes frequently, so don't get too used to one thing being in the same place.
Need a pre-built card deck? There's definitely something there for you. Pokémon and Magic are the prominent decks you'll see. Beyond this, they sell antiques by the boatloads. Keychains, plushies, even replica swords and other battle gear from different game franchises!
Unlike Gamestop, they don't try to get you to buy more than what you want. They'll ask you if you want a membership and a sub to their email newsletter, and that's it. No fluff. If you say no, they leave it at that.
Sounds awesome, right? Well.. Here's why this review is 4 stars...
When it comes to used cartridges, they keep them behind a glass door. And maybe this is just me but I feel very awkward standing in front of it waiting for an employee to take notice of me. I get /why/ it is the way it is, but it makes for unpleasant interactions and can make a quick grab-n-go shopping spree feel like you'd be better off waiting for Mother 3 to be released in full English translation in America (Only Nintendo fans will get this).
And, as mentioned earlier, the placement of things shift around throughout the month. Again, I get /why/, it's just mildly inconvenient when you think you know where something is, only to find it somewhere completely different.
Other than these two things, It's a cool place with cool stuff run by fellow geeks and alternative media fanatics. Too bad it isn't...
