Slash Creek Outfitters — Local services in Hatteras Island

We rented 4 chairs, 3 bikes, a beach cart, and 2 kayaks from Slash Creek and were very happy with all of it. Everything was very good quality, especially the bikes. We had rented similar merchandise the previous year from a large discount national rental chain that is available in OBX and were very unhappy with it. The bikes creaked and groaned, were uncomfortable, and felt very cheap. In contrast, the bikes from Slash Creek were solid and comfortable, as were the chairs and kayaks. And the beach cart made it very easy to transport it all to the beach. Simply put, you get what you pay for. In addition to having quality merchandise, Slash Creek is located right in Hatteras Village so if you need anything, they are right there. That 'other' place has a facility in Manteo where they service the entire OBX from, and good luck finding their phone number. The staff was amazing, and knowledgeable. I will say, be cautious if you aren’t comfortable following a map. It is very easy to get turned around in the creeks and through-ways. We assumed the statement of beaches on the tip meant we would see people, possibly be able to pull in and even grab some food from a vendor. Most of what we saw was private. So be aware for windy days - pack a snack and lots of water! It was so much fun and we are glad we did this adventure! In the creeks, keep your eye out for wildlife - we saw a fawn, multiple large birds, turtles and hermit crabs. Pro tip: have your phone fully charged and in a water proof case for help...

We rented kayaks to go kayaking with our kids. We were inexperienced kayakers. They showed us our route and fitted us for life vests. They were very helpful in explaining everything and even gave us a dry bag to put our phones in during the trip. Once we got out there, the wind was pretty strong in one direction so we changed the route and basically stayed fairly close to the drop off point. We didn’t use the full hour but expected to pay for the hour rental. We were pleasantly surprised that they prorated our rentals to the time we actually used.
