Honestly hate to leave a bad review but the people deserve to be warned--the vibes here are way off. Do NOT plan to spend your vacation here. Biggest problem is the two decaying trailers in the middle of the campground. The single wide is apparently for rent (it looks dilapidated from the outside, not a cute rental trailer)--the doublewide someone randomly lives in. Yes, there is a random, shoddy double wide in the middle of the campground. They need to get rid of these and build a playground in this spot. Other than the random rotten trailers in the middle of everything, the rv sites are itty bitty and the roads are so narrow there's not space to pass, someone has to reverse down the entire row. The RV sites behind the office seem like they were stuffed behind the dumpsters. There is not a scrap of shade anywhere. No family bathroom options!! The bathroom was clean but in the way that a shady truck stop bathroom is clean--it's still kind of off. The shower stalls don't go all the way to the floor and the whole time I was in there I was waiting for someone to stick a camera under the door. Showers are inside the gendered bathrooms and there are no family bathroom options. This is a problem if you have a kid of the opposite gender who is old enough to know they're in the wrong bathroom, who is old enough to briefly send into their bathroom alone, but not old enough to be in there for 15 minutes showering alone with random adults around. Bathrooms are definitely too far--I have been camping my entire life (primitive campgrounds, state/national parks, camping "resorts," everywhere) and from the cottages to the bathroom was the farthest I've ever walked. There is a fence up behind the cottages to prevent "cutting through camp sites." During our stay, all of these were vacant so were were just walking three times as far for no reason. I've never camped somewhere I didn't occasionally walk through the corner of a different site (or someone walked through mine) to access the bathroom. So what should you do instead? Okay, if you are cool with bugs (this campground has bugs, it's just part of the beach) and willing to have more primitive accommodations, stay at a national seashore campground. The trade off to be right at the beach and in nature is worth the discomfort. If you have kids and don't want to struggle with heat and bugs, stay at one of the other camping "resorts" -- there are two better options than this (e.g. family bathrooms, fun atmosphere, not packed like sardines, and a playground), both with cabin options priced similarly. If you are looking for something a step up from cabin camping, there are "condos" and lots of cute motels/inns around that lean into the cute retro motel feel. The vibes there are going to be superior to this.

We found this place online & it looked nice so we called & spoke with amy. We told her we were using tents and there would be 4 tents 2 on each site. She told asked if we wanted waterfront & of course we said yes, so she told us it would be 118 for 2 nights per site. So we paid over the phone & got the email receipt, no other charges were explained. We came down from VA for my dad's bday weekend (April 13th to 15th) We came in pretty late, around 10 or so but they had the welcome packet in the case by the office. They put us in section A, sites 2 and 3. They were super TINY. So since they were almost completely vacant, we switched spots. We called the number on the paper but no answer even though it says to call after hours. So in the morning were guessing the manager came by and freaked out on us saying this could've been a huge problem about us moving sites and that there aren't any tent sites available. On their website, it gives you an option for tent camping. Well I get it being a huge problem if it was packed there. There were literally 3 other campers, which were rv's. We went into the office and she charged us for a 6 year old being with us cause it was over 8 people...okay we paid. Then we were charged for overflow parking cause there were 4 cars. Mind you the sites have ample parking. They made us park our cars around the office in the back on grass. Not even a parking lot. I could've parked on a driveway at the site that we just paid 250$ for. No one told us about these charges prior to us coming there. The manager was rude & I feel like she gets away with it cause they have a no refund at all policy. Great way to run a business. I personally would be nice if I wanted return customers. But to each their own. My brother got shocked trying to flip the breaker since the site We were on didnt have power. The campground is in a great location & the womens bathrooms were clean but the hand dryer didnt work. Men's bathroom was gross. There really wasn't anything to do at the campground itself so I don't know why it's so much. They kept the office closed so even if we wanted to go in to play pool or buy drinks we couldn't. I get its the off season but you still have paying customers there. All in all, we won't be returning.

We spent the Labor Day weekend at Hatteras Sands and it was an overall great experience. We chose to stay in the cottages which has two beds upstairs and a queen bed downstairs. It comes with a small refrigerator and adequate space above to store groceries. If you look at the pictures on their website, it's a bit outdated. As you can see from our picture, the picnic tables are on a concrete pad and they are updated a bit. Nothing major. Additionally, there is a raised septic system in front of the units now and while that sounds like a problem, it's not at all. No issues with smells during our stay. One big downside of the cottages is no bathroom or even quick access to running water. While not a big deal since the bath house and arcade are within walking distance, it would be nice to have a water spigot (even if there was a single one for all units) so that you can clean off grilling utensils, etc. We ended up buying some jugs of water so we didnt have to keep running back and forth, so be sure to do the same. As far as comfort, they were perfectly fine for what we expected. We didn't spend any time in the cottages other than sleeping. Luckily we had fantastic weather so that helps. If it were to be a weekend of storms, we might have had a different opinion. Regarding Hatteras Island itself, if you have a golf cart, bring it. Nothing beats cruising the island on a golf cart and running to get ice cream with the family. All in all, this might become a yearly family trip for us, highly recommend.

This is an extremely long review but please read and beware before staying at Hatteras Sands!||My family and I are frequent campers at HS; we usually come down twice a year for the past several years. Until now all of our experiences have been stellar and even though Hatteras Sands is a little run down in some areas we liked staying because the staff was friendly and accommodating. I do not know what has happened (perhaps new management or ownership) but things are severely lacking in the customer service department.||Let me preface by saying I witnessed the below events and was completely shocked by the behavior and level of unprofessionalism in which things were handled.||My cousin rented a double lot and was told even though she paid for the double lot that since she had two cars she would need to pay an extra $100 for the second vehicle to park. She paid this $100 as well as an additional $75 for her mother to be able to come and use the overflow parking which is nothing more than a grassy lot next to a bunch of junk. She proceeded to park her additional vehicle in the space next to her camper as instructed. While cooking dinner we were being watched by a male outside the office and as we sat down to dinner the female “manager” and male rode over on their golf cart to inform us that our fire needed a cover over it if we were not cooking; no problem, this was an oversight on our part. Then miss manager advised that we needed to move said vehicle to the overflow parking even though my cousin had a double lot and paid $100 extra for parking. I proceeded to get into a heated argument with the woman, she refused to listen and was extremely rude. She made sure to say “I’m the manager who runs things here”…Was I in the wrong for yelling? Perhaps I was but she informed us that the owner of the campground would be calling; great! They never called…||The next day my aunt and cousin went to the office to discuss the matter calmly to which the manager was very condescending, rude and unwilling to have any kind of dialogue. She instructed them to leave the office immediately; which they did without further conversation or argument. The same male from the previous night proceeded to follow them on his golf cart and confront my aunt screaming at her and telling her to “go smoke some more meth”. We assume because we are residents of West Va. He said this in front of my 9 year old son and two other small children. This was highly unprofessional and utterly uncalled for. At this point she is in fear that this man is going to potentially harm her or her children. She proceeded to pack up her entire site and the children while this same male sat at an empty cabin nearby and watched her the entire time. Creepy!||Finally…the owner did call; she was very nice and did her best to rectify the situation. But the damage had already been done the result being a partial refund for the remainder of the days left on their reservation and my cousin moving to a campground down the road. To me this is not acceptable; she should have been give a full refund.||Later we were shocked to find out the aggressive male is not even an employee of the campground but a subcontractor who performs odd jobs and the boyfriend of the so-called manager. They actually live in an area at the back of the office. They both made everyone feel unsafe and uncomfortable not to mention the derogatory meth comment.||A word to the owner- this is not how to do business. You need to check in on your employees from time to time. Allowing such behavior is appalling and they will put you out of business if things continue on this way. I have read other reviews, we are not the only ones to have these issues. My cousin, my husband and myself as well as my mother in law; we all paid and we all saw and heard what happened first hand. We know many who frequent this establishment and we will be telling them all about this experience. More than anger I feel disappointment at the entire situation. This was a wonderful place where many memories were made and now ruined by a poor...

My family and I have been staying at Hatteras sands campground for 5 plus years. We have always had young children that go with us my two children, who are both under 4 and my cousins 9 year old. Up till this past trip we have always been welcomed with nice friendly management. My husband and I for the past 3 years have rented a double lot due to the fact we bring two vehicles. Our truck to pull the camper and to use to go on the beach and our Durango to do other activities in the area. ||We have never had an issue with having a second vehicle on the double lot till this September. I had to pay $100 to have the second vehicle plus another fee for my mom to be able to park in over flow parking. Even though I did not agree with I paid with no argument. I was told that my second vehicle was good to park on our lots. Which is how it has been for 5 plus years. ||Now the problems started when we having a dinner. My mom patked in overflow parking , my cousin and her family walked from their campsite and my vehicle was parked on the cement pad at my second lot. We cooked over a fire. We did know that it had to covered, however we at that very moment was trying to get our children fed and taken care and it slipped our minds for that moment. The management came to tell us while we were eating dinner that we had to cover it not an issue. Do I believe they could have waited till after we had dinner yes. The management proceeded to tell us that my husbands truck coukdnt be patked by the canal because they had just fixed it. Again no problem we moved the vehicle. Could they have waited till we were finished dinner yes. Now the major problem comes when we were informed we could only have one vehicle at are lot after being told at check in that we could have both vehicles at our lot. With this statement the management was very rude border line nasty. ||I informed them that I purchased a double lot and paid for my second vehicle to be on the lot. Again we were told could not have it there. We were also told the owner would be contacting us. Which is great. However I had to contact the owner to solve this situation. That escalated very quickly the next day when my aunt and I tried to talk to the manager because we just thought maybe she was having a bad day. That was not the case. She was very condescending towards me. Tried to tell me she always does things by the rules which is not true. I personally witness the campers that were staying in the cabin beside us had a fire that was plowing sparks under the cabins and was not covered and not once was anything said to them about this. We were told to leave the office because we were rude and that we were being nasty. She told me I had ruined her entire evening. Trust me the feeling was mutual. ||While trying to contact the owner a man that was driving one of the HS golf carts told my mother and aunt that they need to calm down and go smoke some drugs. Not saying what it is I am unsure rules on that on here. Needless to say this is not a safe campground for anyone with young children. I would highly suggest if you have children to go to a different campground. ||Now I did speak to the owner this was a completely different experience. The owner is very understanding and helpful. After hearing what all went on she could not believe it. Come to find out the man that made the horrifying comment doesn't even work at HS campground. She was very sorry and refunded as our money for all but the two nights we did stay at the campground. My husband took our children to my mother who was staying off the campground and I proceeded to pack our camper up alone. The man that had made the drug comment say on the porch of an empty cabin and stared at me. He left when my husband returned. Needless to stay that was my last stay at...
