Moped Direct established 1989 — Local services in Honolulu

This is a great place to buy a moped! The moped is affordable and it runs great. Joe (owner) and his staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. The place is on the smaller side, but they run things quite efficiently. The service is great!

My experiences with moped direct (significantly longer review) are as follows.

My first purchase was a few years ago. I knew I wanted a moped so I walked in and Joe set me up with my moped and had Matt go out and teach me the basics of mopeds; how to turn it on, kick start it, what the button functions are and how to ride it (at no extra charge).

For this first moped I came in for a few oil changes and a belt change. Appointments arenʻt necessary, but it can be helpful to call beforehand to just to make sure they arenʻt too busy. In general each of these services I had done I came by, told them what I wanted done, walked to safeway area had lunch came back and it was done!

I actually ended up giving this moped away so I came back for a second moped around February of 2019. Moped prices were a bit higher however Joe set me up with a moped for the same price as before!

With this second moped, the gas gauge did break but I donʻt think it was anyones fault but I walked my moped over confused and a new gauge and full tank of gas was added free of charge! I did feel weird having services done and not paying anything but I was super grateful!!

Super unfortunate but in my neighborhood this lady was cutting the corner into the turn and looking at her kid in the front seat and she ended up totaling my fairly new moped. T.T

Luckily she had insurance and they paid for the moped at an estimated cost of what it was worth at the time of the accident. It was not full price of what I purchased it for so I was a bit nervous Iʻd have to pay out of pocket however yesterday I hauled my totaled moped over (for hopes of some sort of trade in value) and was able to purchase another moped at a significantly lower price.

Just general housekeeping things for first timers moped owners but you will want to purchase a lock which are sold at moped direct and lock the moped all the time. Mopeds are frequently stolen in Honolulu! I personally bought a second car clicker type lock and store the motion sensor in the seat cover as added protection from theft. Second thing to note, the license plate is sent to the address on file after a couple weeks. I donʻt have tools so I bring it in and they do it in like 2 min.

All in all I really do like moped direct and recommend it for anyone thinking about...

I kept going to Apex mopeds and every time I went there I came back with another problem, (more issues or the bike put back together wrong, ect)

I went to Apex mopeds not to long ago for a broken throttle cable and they replaced it but they didnt install it correctly. My moped also came back with sputtering and issues stalling out. I mean I tried everything to fix it myself. (Because I refuse to go back to Apex Mopeds and spend tons of money to get a moped worse off than before I took in)

I put in a New CDI, new carburetor, new vacuum cables, new ignition coil and spark plug. I changed the oil, (tried but failed to readjust the throttle cable myself) and nothing worked, I was stumped.

I called Moped Direct due to the overwhelming positive reviews and spoke with Gerard Santos. He said, unfortuantely they don't work on prontos (My moped label since it was bought from Apex Mopeds) at their shop but while they can't work on a Pronto at their shop, they can come to me. That alone Impressed me.

Gerard came over this morning and not only did he fix the problems caused by Apex Mopeds incorrectly installing the throttle but he made it run better than before.

No more having to go back constantly, because another problem suspiciously arises after taking it in. I even got to watch everything he did. I mean, in less than an hour, (all problems fixed and running better than it ever had).

Just talking to Gerard, you could tell he knew his stuff and had been doing this a long time (as opposed to Apex mopeds as they have nothing but young fresh newbies who have no idea what they are doing and obviously do not get trained well.)

I am just so relieved and impressed by Gerards knowledge and skill level with mopeds. He will now be my new go-to person when problems arise as I found him to be highly skilled, knowledgable, trustworthy, and reliable to do the job needed done and done right the first time.

PS, I have also had a bad experience with Moped Doctors. The main guy who owns the place is really rude and the last time I used them, multiple screws fell out of my moped. (Smh)

Wanted to invest in a new moped since I go to college and work part time; just so I could make things easier on myself since I work late hours or right after class and don't have time for the bus. Keep in mind I was a little hesitant going around asking moped places for prices because I was by myself. I'm a relatively small/young girl who has no background in any sort of mechanics and have never made a big purchase like this without the help of my parents before. I went to EVERY SINGLE moped shop in town and I felt alright about them, but not completely sold. Walked into Mopeds Direct and Joe immediately gave me honest and straightforward answers to my basic questions. He didn't beat around the bush and was able to make me feel valued as a customer in a genuine and friendly way. I had NO reason to feel as if I was being taken advantage of, unlike the other shops I had talked to. I talked story for awhile with him while he took care of my registration and safety check. Two other people walked in while I was waiting, but he multitasked and got them taken care of as well. It was obvious that he really builds a relationship with his customers as he was able to ask them questions both about their mopeds condition and personal life. Great first time moped buying experience! Don't let the look of the place discourage you from buying. The back is literally their shop. Don't buy into the mirage of other places.
