An unassuming fantastic tea shop. If you like different types of green tea, hojicha, or matcha this is a must try.

I tried the pairing of tea with gelato, where I was able to choose 2 flavors of gelato to combine with a selection of green tea. I chose the kinako and black sesame gelatos to pair with the hojicha. Take-san, the owner, takes pride in his tea asking me to smell and taste the leaves before he makes the first brew.

I was served the tea, and asked to smell the leaves inside the tea pot and then served the kinako gelato. This combination is incredible. The flavors meld so well together and the light sweetness from the sugar cane syrup contrasts excellent with the delicate flavor of the hojicha. The second brew of the hojicha is served and then the black sesame gelato came out. The flavor of the black sesame is excellent, but for me, was not a great pairing with the hojicha, as it overpowered the tea. Great individually, but not something I would recommend together. You end with a final brew of the tea leaves, which is very light.

I ordered both the Hojicha and Matcha drinks, and let me just say, they are hands down the best I’ve had on the island. The flavors are bold yet balanced, smooth yet complex. You can taste the quality in every sip. It’s clear that they treat tea like an art form, not just a beverage.

Cha to Gelato Zen is by far one of the best Matcha places on Hawaii! If you live or visiting Honolulu, and are craving Matcha, I highly recommend coming to this Matcha specialty store. This place opens late and is a mini bar as well as makes ceremonial top-tier Matcha drinks and gelato. I was fortunate enough to find this place and wanted to taste Matcha in Honolulu. Luckily, this place has a wide variety of flavors of ice cream, as well as Matcha. The staff working at the store knows exactly how to prepare a pizzazz Matcha drink as well as having a great connection with the customer by educating them. The flavor of the ice cream that I picked which was a miso fermented gelato, tasted extremely phenomenal as well as enjoying a hojicha latte made right in front of you! The ambience of the Matcha Store feels like you just entered Tokyo, experiencing top grade ceremonial Matcha. I highly recommend this place to get top-tier matcha and is worth every penny. Visiting from Vegas there are many Matcha places that don’t use top-tier Matcha yet however, Hawaii is extremely lucky to have a place like this! Will definitely come back for more scrumptious Matcha and gelato!
