I was driving past the place on a Saturday and after seeing the MISFIT Toys sign, decided to come in and pay a visit.
Upon entering I was hit with an inundating wave of sweet nostalgia, I saw new/old stock of Star Wars memorabilia in anything you could think of: it’s enough to make any Star Wars fiend phase out of existence, and that’s just the beginning, they have vintage horror movie figurines, some still in the package and some in protective bags with the name and fair pricing accordingly. Further in is the high dollar collectible figures, movie props, stand-up life size dummies, and even legit official GhostBusters stage memorabilia, WWF/WWC/ECW wrestling figures, GI JOE, and other assorted intellectual licenses that to lay your eyes upon will tug at your heart strings and bring you a sense of joy that only childhood wonders can uncover in the sometimes jaded and calcified ideals of the terminally adult peoples.
The location is not huge, but the utilization of the space and inventory that lines every square inch of the business never reminds you of that and certainly leaves nothing to be desired once you’re ready to leave.
My one and only critique is super small and picky: I’d like to see more Conan the Barbarian 1982 movie merchandise specifically, and/or just more Conan period, this character is just as important as the other giant franchises to arise from the mid 1980’s to the 2000’s
While He-Man and Spawn are there: most notably the super vintage and muct sought He Man Skeletor’s Castle and figurines. I’d like to see more sword and sorcery represented in general, but that’s the only, albeit petty thing I’d criticize.
Beyond this, I cannot be more thankful to Misfit Toys and other shops that stand against the dying of the light and vivid imagined kingdoms birthed from alienation and the all too human attraction of heroism and villainy.
Keep up the good fight boys, and to HOUSTON: bring them your unwanted/unappreciated or pre-loved relics of your childhood to Misfit Toys &/or places just like this so they might be transmuted into funds for you, but much needed nostalgia and nurturing of the kid in everyone that still believed in the possibility of hidden worlds, impossible quests, indomitable spirit, and otherworldly feats.
It takes our patronage and attention to nurture businesses like this while keeping the landscape fertile and profitable for these kind of niché establishments. The more we do this, the more diverse small businesses rise to fill the need. This mutually beneficial cycle repeated over and over will transform Houston into a place that truly represents Houstonians.
This is the only answer to soulless & sterilized corporatizing filling or building eyesore buildings filled with subpar, intentionally flawed products intended to make repeat buys unavoidable. A business that calls the same sands as you home will reflect the same...
Read moreThis place is a scam and a joke I went in to sell American McGee Alice in Wonderland figures. Now I sent them pictures before hand but did extensive research online to check the resale of these toys and they we’re going for very high price points. Now the store asked me for pictures, to which I sent them! Not to long after they contacted me very interested in what I had to offer which was the entire set something very few people online selling these even have. I notice another toy retail store selling the toys out of the package for 1000$ and it was not even the complete set! Only to go into this place and have the owner smelling the boxes like a dog trying to make the accusation that the toys had been open only to retract the statement when he realized the binds holding them were still in place and even though on the phone he showed great enthusiasm in wanting the toys had the nerve to try and pretend like he did not know what these toys were but proceed to say he had a set of these before but they did not sell well but somehow did not have these toys anywhere in the store at all plus tried to claim the boxes were in poor condition but I saw toys with faded and discolored boxes with dents and crunched up plastic packaging selling for 200-400 dollars, toys with no packaging selling for hundreds of dollars, but tried to gaslight me with the poor packaging play and talking about the set he had before he sold them for 25$ which was an outright lie seeing as he claimed to not know what these toys were when he initially saw them and offered me and insulting 200$ for the set when online one of those toys from the set were going for that or higher alone! These people are scam and con artist do not patronize a place like this they are a blight on the collectible resale business and they do not deal honestly with the community of collectors! They are looking to game you of your memories and resale them for prices akin to...
Read more1st time going here. Was hyped about seeing some old and newer stuff. It seems they deal alot more with TMNT, Starwars, GI Joe and Transformers stuff which is cool. MOTU section is maybe 3' x 6' half wall and the figures are not at all what you'd expect. Pricing could be alot better for broken bands and messed up appearances. You'd be better off buying from a store that actually takes time to repair a figure before trying to sell it. Had 2 MOTU figures break on the way home. Partly my fault for not checking before purchasing, but you really shouldn't have to do that. Instead of $20 to $25 dollar figures they should be more like $5 figures. 90% of them were for sale and not 100% completed. You'd be better off getting your MOTU collection somewhere else. All their other stuff looked good. I guess they put the time and money into high ticket items. Pricing was OK, but could be better. I'm giving them 2 stars because the selection of the other stuff was good. The MOTU was poor and not laid out well at all. The staff: 3 gentlemen were there. Only 1 of them greated me and ask if I needed help while he was loading and unloading a cart. The other 2 didn't acknowledge me at all. They were too busy standing around and talking. They really should've been fixing some MOTU figures with that free time on their hands for what they...
