I travel a lot for work, and one of my long-standing habits is to look for local bookstores wherever I happen to be. I was in Jackson several months ago. For whatever reason, I didn't expect to find much. I guess it is because I am from a smaller Southern town myself, and know these are not typically the places one finds great bookstores. I decided to stop by Lemuria. Long story short...this might be the coolest bookstore I have ever browsed. The location, atmosphere, and store architecture are all very unique (you don't really catch this from the pictures). It is also quite large for an independent. But what really astounded me was the selection. I saw books on the shelf at Lemuria that I have never seen inside a bookstore. Lemuria is a good 4 hours or so from my home, but if I ever have an empty day to kill, I would drive back to just to visit this place. I would say Lemuria and Auntie's Bookstore in Spokane, WA are my favorite bookstores right now. And trust me, I have been to a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI agree with another reviewerās post (Katie). The bookstore has a good selection and a very inviting set up that makes you want to take your time. However, the attitude of at least one employee during my time on March 29 around 17:30 was enough to dissuade me from returning. In fact, Iām shocked the lady had enough in her to check me out as I thought it might require more energy than she could exert. The other employees were also just there, sitting in the center. It was a completely different vibe than when I came for a visit two years ago.
Rudely informing customers that the wifi was not for the public was also bizarre, but also - maāam, itās a bookstore. Really not a great impression for myself or my friends visiting from out of town. I hope that the cause of this shift can be sorted because thereās so much potential for this bookstore to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreNo one should EVER put their hands on a child, especially not a stranger in what we thought was a non threatening book store. Up to this point I have never written a negative review of a business, because nothing ever warranted it. The older woman with dark brown short hair, glasses, and a permanent frown secured on her face should not be allowed to work around children. We were in the childrenās section of the store for no more that 2 minutes, my child was running in the CHILDRENāS area for .5 seconds when she abruptly and aggressively grabbed his arm, got in his face, and told him to āstop it right now, thereās no running in this storeā. Iām still in shock. Would have loved to come back, but I will warn every other parent of a 3 year old who loves books that this is not a welcoming or even safe place...
