Reading other reviews makes me feel better about the horrible experience I had on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at approximately 11:00 a.m. I passed by the store on my way to the PATH station after a meeting with a pastor of a nearby church. I had not planned to go into the store because I didn't know it was there, but since it was relatively cold outside I was excited to find it because I figured I could go in and get a cup of coffee. I had my used coffee cup from the 7-Eleven in North Arlington, which I patronize often and never had a problem there, so don't think I have a beef about 7-Eleven stores in general. I like to re-use my coffee cup several times to do my tiny bit to avoid filling landfills and putting more micro-plastics into the environment, so I figured I could use it here. When I went inside, I didn't immediately find the coffee service. I eventually found it, and also found a rack of snack bars and other sweet things, similar to what I find in North Arlington. I am careful about selecting snack bars and sweet things because I try to eat a plant-based diet as much as possible and I am also conscious of things like calorie content. Therefore, I read food labels before buying things to check for ingredients and nutrition information. In the course of all this, a thin, medium-height man who appeared to be of Asian or Middle Eastern descent asked me in a very unfriendly tone, "What are you looking for?" I told him, "I'm just looking," and then I went to the snack-bar rack to try to select something, based on the criteria I laid out above. After I figured out what I wanted, I reached into my insulated lunch bag to pull out my used coffee cup and my wallet, and next thing I knew, this guy was within arm's length of me, claiming that he had seen me put something into my bag. After telling him I had not put anything from the store into my bag, several times, I laid the bag down on the counter and took out my belongings, one by one and showed them to him. I had in there my glasses, my wallet, a hairbrush, a book and my snacks for later in the day. There was nothing in there that I could have taken from 7-Eleven. The only thing in there that 7-Eleven even sells was a HALF-EATEN Nature's Bakery cranberry fig bar package that I had purchased in the North Arlington 7-Eleven two days before. The man then said something like, "Let's leave it" and asked me if I wanted to buy the two items I had selected. I said something to the effect that I had planned to, but wasn't going to now, and left. As I said earlier, I feel better after reading all the reviews of customers going into the store and being followed around, stared at and made to feel uncomfortable. Please understand, I work in retail myself and I am keenly aware of the responsibility to prevent shrink, but this is no excuse to treat someone like a thief and out-and-out say a person is a thief when you have no proof and only your narrow-minded suspicions to go by. Fortunately, I have never been treated like this in any other store, 7-Eleven or anywhere else. That man needs to be talked to. If, in his narrow-minded way, he thought I looked suspicious because it took me too long to find the coffee or the snack bar rack or read the labels, let me share something I learned from working in retail myself. In a situation like that, you go to the customer and ask IN A FRIENDLY WAY, "Hi, can I help you find something?" If he had done this, I would have said something like, "Oh, I was just looking for the coffee," and the whole thing would have turned out differently. By the way, besides not being a thief, I am a giver. I only work part-time at minimum wage, but I donate $10 a month to Doctors without Borders and another $10 a month to New Jersey Together, and I have been a full-time volunteer for most of my adult life. I do not deserve to be treated this way, I am entitled to an apology, and that man needs to be talked to and educated about his...
Read moreToday I was racially profiled by the cashiers. I have came to this 7 eleven multiple times as I live nearby and I have never had an issue until now. Today I simply purchased one bag of Takis. The cashier was an older south asian brown man with white hair, and keep in mind I am a visibly darkskin black woman. He WATCHED me pay for the chips with my phone using Apple Pay and put in my PIN number. When the purchase was complete I pressed no receipt on the screen in front of me because I did not need one. The cashier said nothing to me when the purchase was done neither was anything said when I walked out of the store. I waited for less than two minutes for the light to change so I could walk across the street. As I waited another south asian employee came outside of the store accusing me of not paying for the Takis. I responded that I did and I showed him the notification from my Apple Pay in which you can clearly see I payed 2.89 to 7 Eleven less than 2 minutes ago. He decided to be incompetent and said “That’s Wells Fargo,” and continued to accuse me of not paying. I did not argue and simply told him I paid and walked away. I included the screenshot from my purchase as well. Because of this incident I will try my best to never come to this 7 Eleven again and I will be reporting this to corporate. I was very embarassed and was literally shaking as I walked back to my destination. If you are a black person I would think twice before buying...
Read moreMy mom and I came to this location today a little after midnight. We were only in the front of the store looking at various sandwiches. I was using a magnifying app on my phone as we both are blind and have difficulty reading small print. While we were in the front of the store a guy was stacking sandwiches into a crate. We inquired as to if those sandwiches were available and were told they were for another store which was fine. As we continued to look at sandwiches the guy who was stocking sandwiches stopped and began staring at us for no apparent reason. At first I was not aware of his actions but as a few moments passed and I turned to look at him. To be treated this way in my book is unacceptable so I told my mother that we were leaving. As we were about to leave his colleague walked over and asked if we needed "help". Oddly enough I have been in this establishment several times over the years using my magnifying app on my cell to read item info. I cannot understand why we were blatantly targeted in such a way. We were in front of the store in plain site of everyone. We did not appear disheveled in any way so I have no other assumption than to assume it is due to our skin color. No matter how hungry I was my dignity and self respect will remain paramount. Due to this incident I no longer will do business here. Shame on you for allowing your employees to treat customers like this Absolutely nothing justified this...
