My fiancé purchased my engagement ring here. Opal encircled with diamonds and the ring itself is rose gold. When I received the ring I was in love with it, it was perfect. I work very hard to keep it nice, i never wear it in water just as i was told and i oil it monthly. A few days from receiving it I noticed a small crack in the stone. Took it back to make sure it was fine and was told it was a naturally occurring imperfection in the stone - ok, understandable. However, the jeweler failed to fully inform my fiancé at purchase how extreme an opal could age over time, he only told him that they do change a bit with age, no details. My opal no longer looks like the white stone with faint colors in it that it did when I first received it. I have had it for less than a year and it’s ruined. It looks like a glass bead filled with yellow water. It looks horrible. I took it into the jeweler and they polished it and said to look up online how to care for opals, which I did. Everything online told me that opals do have a chance to do this but that it could be due to being filled with resin (a cheap way to alter opals) and the resin yellowed, or that the opal is just of poor quality. There was nothing i could do to fix my stone and no way to have prevented it as i had done everything correctly. The jeweler should have told us about this risk, and should have replaced the stone but all he did was offer to clean it. I am embarrassed to show it off now because it genuinely looks like diamonds surrounding a glass bead filled with dirt. We are trying to go elsewhere to buy a new stone although I feel as if for the amount my fiancé paid for this that it should be replaced for free with a different stone. I am very sad about this, an engagement ring is supposed to be a lifelong symbol of love but now I have to dispose of a very expensive ruined stone and alter a ring my loved one tried very hard to pick out just for me.
