Little Chocolates — Local services in La Porte

I had an unpleasant experience here that unfortunately occurred right before Christmas. My husband was gifted a box of gourmet chocolate from Chicago for Christmas from his employer. In that box was a candy we had never had before, they were candied citrus peels hand dipped in chocolate. I was thrilled to see what appeared similar on display at Little Chocolates, as we were ready to buy more. I am also employed as a crossing guard for a local elementary school and was skimming the store to buy my walking students a special treat from a local candy shop. The staff behind the counter very loudly asked me if I could be helped, so I told her I was not sure what the candy was called on the end, but they were citrus dipped in chocolate and requested a sample. At 35$ per pound, I wanted to make sure it was in fact the same candy out of the candy box from Chicago. The girl seemed to not know what I was talking about out, although there were no other citrus candies I saw behind the glass? So I pointed and showed her, she turned around and very loudly asked whomever she was working with if I was allowed to be given a sample. This was embarrassing for me, as there were other customers in the store that then all turned and looked at me like I had done something wrong. I was then Told from a guy working behind the counter (again very loudly) that they were denying me a sample of the chocolate due to high demand and volume (there was a pile of the candy I requested) but I was welcome to purchase a piece. Sounds like conflicting information, if I was told no due to volume and demand, why am I permitted to purchase a single piece but not welcome to sample it? I said no thank you and left. I was prepared to spend a lot of money that evening and support our local shops here in LaPorte. It’s a shame that this happened, I am also a small business owner and understand that there are many costs involved in running a small business, however, I have found that a little generosity can go a LONG way and THAT is the impact you make on your customers that will keep them coming back. I am in no way looking for a free hand out or trying to get something for nothing, but reading the reviews on Google suggest many customers have been given free samples from your store so I was confused why I was not permitted to have one. We have been going to Little Chocolates since they first opened and have always found them to be the best Chocolatiers. We have been to many confectionaries and experienced quite a few chocolates from both large commercial and small privately owned shops while traveling across the country. None of the others compare to the smooth quality of Little Chocolates. They keep things simple, with a nice variety, and deliver a high quality product every time. When we moved to Colorado; we would even have their products shipped to us well before they offered shipping as an option. Every trip back through LaPorte would entail a visit and order from Little Chocolates. After moving to Michigan, yes, trips through LaPorte meant a visit to Little Chocolates. We do not often rate businesses because so many are just standard, but not Little Chocolates. They are a gem, the diamond in the rough, and we appreciate the love of their labor. The best chocolate I’ve ever had. I love dark chocolate; their dark chocolate offerings did not disappoint. The dark chocolate maple cream seemed overly sweet at first, but finished with the dark chocolate which made me wish I’d ordered two. I’m usually not impressed with white chocolate, but I’ll always try it. Little Chocolates white chocolate cremes aren’t overly sweet, it leaves a silky mouth feel, and compliments the flavorings so well! Cocoadads are perfection!
