Sharp Bicycle — Local services in Lafayette

Sharp Bicycle was very generous in helping me out today. Earlier this week while biking with my kids, I heard a sound as if something fell off the bike. The reflector on the rear wheel of my Specialized MTB had fallen off, and I saw that the plastic screw or clamp in the middle had fallen off somewhere during the ride. It didn’t make sense for me to buy a whole new pair (and they don’t sell just one reflector) and no one sells just this screw/clamp. I didn’t want to remove the wheel reflectors too since there’s some safety factor why they’re there to begin with.

I called several bike shops around me earlier this week and even visited one other shop, but none seems interested to look for a spare or unused piece that I can purchase from or they can offload.

Today while buying lunch in downtown Lafayette, I decided to give Sharp a call to ask. A nice gentleman said to drop by and let him see what he can do. It turns out they have two spare clamps that he offered me for free! My bike is whole again! Thank you Sharp Bicycle! I’m now a...

I called to ask if they could install tires and tubes on my wheels. I was a little embarrassed to ask because I had worked on them for about 4 hours and couldn't get the tires on. They said to walk in and they'd take a look. When I came in, seeing my wheels in hand, they asked if I was the one who called earlier. It was nice not to have to re-explain my situation. We walked through what parts I had to check that they were right and we went over some other options and why they could be better. They took my wheels and said they'd call and email when they were ready, but there was a backlog built up so it might take longer than normal. They texted and sent me an email barely an hour later that my wheels were ready. When I picked them up, I asked and they confirmed that these were particularly hard wheels to work on, but they got them done.

I love this place. When I moved to Moraga, I thought I would be "smart" and buy our bikes at a big box store. What a big mistake. We wound up with three lemons for the family. When my son outgrew his bike, two or three years later, we went to Sharp. What a difference. We spent a little more, but we got a much better bike, professional advice, and we got him a bike that has been wonderful, unlike the old lemon that was heavy, clunky, and had a terrible gearing system (which is a killer when you live in a hilly area). As a plus, I have never experienced any sales pressure from them. Last time we stopped by, looking for a bike for our then first grader, they actually advised us not to buy a time, because she wasn't tall enough for a new frame, and her old bike was still ok for her.
