Papillon Quality Gourmet — Restaurant in Lafayette

This is a great family-owned local cafe on La Fiesta Square, only a few yards from that other Lafayette staple, Chow. They have an outstanding selection of teas (black, green, herbal, decaffeinated) -- including teas most people have never heard of (e.g., Keemun tea), excellent espresso drinks, pastries, bagels, etc. What makes it special (besides the tea/espresso/etc.) is the family who run the place, the rotating art exhibits, and the local feel. Papillon attracts people of all ages from young mothers with babies to retirees (and everyone in between). Some people come to work on their laptops but a surprising number are there to hang out with their friends and actually talk. There are a few tables outside. Free wifi. My only complaint is that they aren't open late, but I suppose they deserve to have a life outside of work. Wonderful place. I wish we had...

Local coffee shop dead center in Lafayette. The tables are spread out so it's not ideal for huge groups but the serve better scones and muffins than Starbucks. The coffee is okay. It can be busy on weekends especially with bikes and walking groups. Sometimes there's a line which takes forever when there's only 4 people in front of you just ordering coffee.

Parking is NOT free but if you get there and leave by 10am, you won't have to pay. Otherwise, you get the privilege of paying. I don't put that on the business though. It appears to be a private lot and all surrounding businesses are affected. That being said, you'll always be able to park and it's not super expensive to do so.

Great location. Cute atmosphere. Really liked the books. Terrible customer service. We ordered a carrot cake, banana bread, vanilla latte, and a mocha frappe. They brought the order very quickly which was nice. The pastries were pretty good. The vanilla latte was decent (kind of bitter). The mocha frappe, on the other hand, was watery, burnt, and it had an awful aftertaste! I could hardly take a sip. It also didn't have whipped cream as was advertised. We told the barista about the drink and asked if we could change the order or if she could remake the drink but she refused to do either. We ended up leaving with that same disgusting drink in our hands....
