If you have special dietary needs or you need adjustments, this place might not be for you to be completely honest.
It was very hard to figure out what each dish consists of and whether it has, for example, milk products, egg etc... The menu here does not state this at all. My friend and I tried to ask clearance from several waiters and no one seemed to have a clear answer to our concerns. At least two of the waiters said they would "confirm the ingredients from the cook", but disappeared to the kitchen and never came back with the answer.
As a vegan, I give a lot of credit to a place that shows clearly they are aware of what kind of products they should and should not be using in vegan food, and that they are careful with this. I am also happy to notice when they make me feel wanted and that they respect my values as a customer who pays for the food. Here, I didn't feel like that... Instead, I felt like they would sell me just about anything and just say "yeah, it is vegan". They also put the breads with butter (my friend's order) ON TOP of the roti that was supposed to be vegan (my order). I left this restaurant feeling like this place probably has sold me something that I did not sign up for.
The manager was also, unfortunately, pretty attacking when we were trying to give constructive feedback, and this I did not appreciate. I was asking if they would be able to have a clear lists of ingredients (that way even the newer waiters could go and check from very easily). To this, the manager snapped at me and said "we don't have those type of ingredient lists, we are not any kind of fast food place"....So my question is, how does the cook know how to make these if he does not have an ingredient list/recipe? I was pretty shocked to hear this and still trying to comprehend..
I have been to other Indian restaurants where the menu clearly states the "vegan" and "vegetarian" options (as well as the others) which would be great for this place to have as well, not only for the sake of someone's personal beliefs, but also for allergies/intolerance.
I gave an extra star because in despite of this negative experience the food was quite good and the food came quickly. Hopefully the management will take this as a constructive criticism and not a personal...
Read moreDecided to go to the lunch buffet on a Sunday afternoon, and I'm glad that we did because the service was exceptional and the food was delicious. The vibe is relaxing, welcoming, and clean. They have plenty of natural light due to the many windows facing the parking lot. We walked in and the host greeted us immediately. He was friendly and asked us if we would like buffet or to order from the menu. We chose the buffet, well and the menu... My husband ordered saag chicken and garlic naan off of the menu, we were not disappointed. The food was very fresh and well seasoned. My favorites were the Eggplant Masala and the Tandoori Vegetables. The eggplant was very flavorful and it went really well with the garlic naan. The tandoori vegetables were cooked perfectly, still a slight crunch to them, very tasty. I couldn't decide between a mango lassi and a chai, so I got both... no regrets! So satisfying. They have a full bar and much to my husbands delight, they have 805 on tap. Our waiter returned to check on us and fill our water multiple times during lunch. I could see stopping here on the way home from the office to grab dinner and have a drink while the...
Read moreExcellent! Flavorful, fresh Indian. I believe that every dish here, along with every condiment and side, are made fresh from scratch every day. Attentive, very polite service. Some of the best dishes: Tomato Lentil Soup, Paneer Naan, Pallack Paneer (aka, saag paneer), Chicken Makhani (delicious and very mild), Chicken Biryani, and the Shahi Kofta (aka, Malai Kofta). They are always happy to customize a dish, and by default, they don't serve overly-spicy food. But if you like it spicy, or any other special way, just ask and they will do it for you. In my opinion, Swad is one of the best Indian restaurants in the Bay Area, and certainly the best I have found in the East Bay area as far as the quality of food, cleanliness, and service.
It's also GREAT for takeout. I'm walking distance and have ordered to go too many times to disclose. I have NEVER, once, had a mistake in my order. It's packed well and arrived home hot, and the leftovers are great - Indian food breakfast is underrated.
