I recently purchased the Beverly Birthday Cake from Sweet Lady Jane Bakery for a friend’s party, paying $140 plus an additional $30 for custom decorations. While the cake itself was delicious, the experience with their customer service, particularly with Nally, was extremely disappointing and the cake was received with deformities.
I specifically requested no white flowers on the cake, opting for “Happy Birthday” written in gold with gold glitter around the cake. Nally assured me this could be done with the upcharge. However, when I picked up the cake, the writing was brown, blending into the dark chocolate shell and barely visible. To add to my frustration, the cake was covered in the very white flowers I explicitly asked them to leave off, and the glitter was uneven. There were also visible deformities on the cake—certainly not what I expected from a $170 cake.
I brought these issues to Nally’s attention, and the only thing acknowledged was the writing error, for which I was offered a $30 refund. There was no mention of the flowers or the cake’s poor appearance. To make matters worse, it’s been over a week and a half, and despite my follow-up emails, I’ve received no refund and no further communication.
I caution anyone considering Sweet Lady Jane to proceed carefully, especially if you’re expecting attention to detail and professional customer service. Simple instructions were not followed, and communication has been non-existent. I am now left with no choice but to leave this review and dispute the charge with my credit card company.
The two stars is because I did speak with Angel, the manager of the Larchmont location who acknowledged it is not right that I have not been followed up with after all this time and he would text Nally directly. Still...
Read moreI ordered SLJ’s infamous Triple Berry Cake after hearing it rivaled — even surpassed — Whole Foods’ Berry Chantilly Cake. With high expectations fueled by online praise, I took my first bite and was immediately struck: everything from the cake layers to the whipped cream frosting to the fruit was simply better.
SLJ’s cake was more moist, with a delicate, smooth flavor. In contrast, Whole Foods’ version tended to be drier and overly sweet, with an intrusive burst of almond at the end. What makes both cakes special is their lightness — they're meant to highlight the freshness of the fruit and the subtlety of the whipped cream. WFM’s buttercream and almond essence overwhelmed that balance. SLJ stayed true to the concept: light, airy, and fruit-forward.
The fruit filling in SLJ’s cake was also notably fresher and juicier. WFM’s fruit, by comparison, sometimes tasted stale, and other times under-ripe.
In every sensory category, SLJ’s Triple Berry Cake came out on top. But would I switch permanently? Probably not — the price is hard to justify. SLJ’s 9” cake is $120, compared to WFM’s at $39. While SLJ’s quality is undeniably superior, it’s not worth triple the cost for me. For special occasions, maybe. But for regular indulgence, I’ll...
Read moreWhen you're paying $12 per slice of cake you would expect some smile on your face & paying a close attention to your customer's questions. We didn't receive any of that here tonight. We arrived at 6:30pm on Sunday night and I believe the store was closing soon but the girl was unwelcoming and unattentive to all of our questions because the Triple Berry cake was out that evening. We still bought 2 slices of cakes, one slice of apple pie and one fudge brownie for $45 dollars. As we left the establishment, she slammed the door behind us really loud!. We turned around and was shocked. This is not the lady Jane I remember a few years ago in Beverly Hills on Melrose, they were so nice. It should be the same here carrying the same name & reputation. We've been a loyal customer at the original store on Beverly street for over 10 years but I don't think we want to come to the Larchmont location...
