I am a former local from O'ahu who moved to the mainland a few years ago. My parents were born there, and I went through the local grade school system. I asked a mainland friend who visited Maui recently to bring me back some Chinese "crack seed" ginger, something I first tried at McCully Chop Sui. I ended up receiving wet Li Hing Mui that was literally cracked. As in, smashed. The seeds were impossible to eat, as I kept spitting them out. My friend told me she got an extremely cold reception. Perhaps she was too "mainland tourist" or something.
I realize Maui has gone through some tragic trauma recently. But visitors, whether they are from Hawaii or not, do have options. My friend is now considering Kona for her vacation next year instead, even though she has been a regular to Maui all her life. And I doubt I will ever visit...
