Golden City Asian Food Market — Local services in Metairie

The store is decent. I am glad it’s here. My wife is Filipino and she is happy to find certain items from her home in this location. I went in with my 2 year old son and had to change his diaper. We went into the men’s room to find deplorable conditions. It’s pretty normal to not find a changing station in a men’s room so I wasn’t surprised by that. The floor of the men’s room was disgusting. My son and I went into the stall to try to change his pull up. There appeared to be spit or snot or semen or who knows what everywhere. Snot rockets on the walls . There was urine all over the floor floating in the grout lines. Boxes of bathroom supplies stacked in the middle of the room soaking in filth. A foul smell. No paper towels or air dryer . My son ended up getting whatever was on the floor on his shorts as I desperately tried to change him and keep him clean at the same time. I should have just gone back out to the car. Lesson learned. So in short, the store is ok. The bathroom is disgusting. Hope you will consider better hygiene in your bathrooms. We will go to the Hong Kong market on the West Bank moving forward. I come very regularly for my Asian grocery needs. Bakery shipments come in Tues/Thurs afternoon, so I'd come after that. Sometimes the produce quality can be a little suspect (speaking specifically about bitter melon and eggplant) but lately I've had less issues with that than before. My pro tip: they sell their red bell peppers by the pound, not the unit. Stock up.

Beyond that, they just have a really solid selection of sauces and condiments, as well as a lot of dry goods and general staples. They also stock homemade tofu and 5 spice braised homemade tofu; somewhat inconsistently they will also have tofu pudding. They usually have a few 'deli' options like pre-made banh mi, dumplings, and sticky rice.

They definitely lean more towards stocking Chinese products, though, so Korean and Vietnamese items can be harder to find or have far less options. They could also use a bit better organization for some areas, as it isn't always clear where an item will be.

All that said, it is definitely my favorite all-around Asian market in the area, and I can almost always find...

My first time walking in here shocked me. The outside (well at least the front) is so pretty you would think it was a restaurant. But going inside, you are overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff haphazardly shelves everywhere. There no reason to the organization of the store. They really just throw what they can where they can fit it. I have to say though, if you need something as far as Asian grocery is concerned, it's probably there. But good luck finding it. Some of the freezers have a dubious buzz to them that make the cold food inside seem less appealing. The place is old and dirty with boxes everywhere and things clogging up the aisle to were you can't push a cart through. Unfortunately prices are high. While this could be just a sign of the times and tariffs, it's hard to justify buying some things unless I really need them.
