I've been a resident of this Residential Reentry Center (RRC, aka halfway house) for the last five months and have to disagree with what some people have posted. What individuals leaving prison will get out of their time at the RRC is directly proportional to the effort they put in while a resident there. If they are willing to work hard at finding a decent job, transportation, and a place to work, the case managers and other staff are more than willing to help them out. But if they want to just lay around, watch TV, and order food in, they CANNOT complain about the staff not being helpful!
Is it an ideal facility? No. There are issues - some of the food isn't great, the level of cleanliness could be improved, and there are some HVAC issues. But I have found the staff willing to address those issues if they are made aware of them.
As for the location, I think there's a real energy and excitement on E Lake Street, particularly as the area continues to rebuild and grow following the 2020 riots. The old O'Reilly Auto Parts store next to the RRC has been razed and a new Latino community center will be built on the site. The rebuilt Walgreens on 31st and E Lake is clean and well stocked, and handy for residents who need prescriptions filled. Target, Cub, Aldi, and the East Lake library are all within easy walking distance. The Coliseum building is almost done being remodeled, and that same non-profit will next tackle the empty lot across from the RRC.
As far as public transportation goes, the location is ideal. We're directly on the 21 bus route, a couple of blocks off the 7 bus route, and about four blocks from the light rail station. There are certainly issues with homelessness in the area, but that hasn't stopped me from getting out and about using all...
