In the Twin Cities we are fortunate to have the 2 main categories of Mexican restaurants: traditional Mexican and "distinctively" Mexican. Sonora Grill is part of the latter. The chefs here use their cullinary wisdom to put their own unique spin on Mexican food through their choices of ingredients and technique and also through fusion. They start you off with the customary chips and salsa and the salsa I noticed is more like the kind you would get going to Mexico City which is a slightly smokey chipotle/ arbol type of salsa. A welcomed variation. We started with the very popular hermosillo roll which is a fusion of an asian egg roll and sushi and Mexican grilled meats served on top of a soy sauce and a spin on a sushi type of aoili. This was very delicious and very big too. We had the pork empanadas. Mine were just a little overdone but the girlfriend said thats how she likes them. They were still nice and flaky with well flavored and spiced meat on top of an aoli. We had the Cuban pork sandwich and yucca fries. These were also very tasty and distinct. The service here is excellent and so very friendly. I can recommend this place to anyone but if there's one thing to keep in mind it would be that this places loves their aoilis. Everything we ordered came with some kind of aoili. I'm sure some might say it is aoili overload. I personally would like to see them try more wet sauces versus heavy ones.

EXPERIENCE: The patio was lovely, until it started raining, but even then it was find because there is a canopy-like covering over it that mitigates some of the rain water. We stayed outside the whole time regardless. They inside looked nice too but was pretty loud for talking! Our servers were very friendly and helpful. As you walk in, there is a QR code on the host stand that links to the menu. They have some off street parking, but I can imagine that gets full during busier times. DRINKS: We had two different cocktails: one is the Piña Colada and the other is the Mango Margarita. The marg was on the rocks with some fancy garnishes, like the side of the glass was coated in cayenne (?) And there was a green gummy life saver on the straw. Yum! I wish it was more mixed up though, but it was all good. It looked pretty separated. FOOD: I had the Hermosillo Roll from the appetizers section and my friend I was dining with had the Chimichanga. The Hermosillo was good, it was simar to sushi but it was breaded and fried around the outside, followed by a layer of white rice and veggies. So good! CONCLUSION: Price is moderate, I had the marg and app as a meal plus tax and tip as $30. Overall, a positive experience I would go back again.

Disappointed. The service and cocktails were the only saving grace. We ordered the Elote first and the dish was lovely and tasted pretty good so we had high hopes but the next dish was the Hermsillo Roll - and it was disgusting. I hate to be so harsh bite yikes! Steer clear of this it should be removed from the menu. We ordered the Brisket burrito as our main and the shell was the best part! The meat was tender and you could tell it would have been better if it wasn't slathered in mayo sauce. Also the fries on the inside of the burrito was a carb overload - and I like carbs! I ended up unwrapping the whole thing, removing the fries (which were perfectly fine on their own) and eating the meat that was not swimming in sauce. Pretty good! But not good enough that I'll be back and I certainly would not bring people here when they visit from out of town. I appreciate the creativity of the kitchen but less might be more when it comes to these dishes.

Customer service was terrible. Never saw our original waitess after putting in our dinner order. Someone else delivered it after it sat on the bar. After we finished dinner, visited as we waited, sat unattended for 20 or so minutes. Asked the bartender Jenna who started hollering at us that our waitress would bring them. Tried to tell her we hadn't seen her, she got very obnoxious, cursing loud at us as we tried to explain the waitress she was referring was not ours. The conversation got heated due to her verbal abuse toward us. She threatened to call the police. Not sure why all we wanted were boxes and our checks. She hollered she was the owner and for us to get out (myself, my 80 year old mother (her birthday dinner by the way) and sister). She was totally disrespectful of us and the customers that were enjoying their dinner. There was even a child present. I was embarrassed for for my Mother and others that had to witness the lack of tact this Jenna displayed. For the good of your restaurant get rid of Jenna (who said she was the owner), train the staff that if they will be leaving to have the person taking over tend to their tables. We might still be sitting there if we hadn't asked for boxes. None of the 2 front staff were attentive at all. Jenna was having a long drawn outconversation with a guy at the bar soon as we interrupted her the disrespect began, the other waitress was taking care of her tables. I'm so disappointed. We had heard...

Overpriced food and extremely rude server. Went for dinner and drinks with my friend, who was disappointed by the quality of the food versus the price and the lack of traditional things at a restaurant that serves mexican food. We were told “This isn’t tex mex” after my friend conveyed her disappointment and, “Well what do you want me to do about the bill?” It was never about getting a refund, but she aggressively comped our drinks at her own suggestion and tromped in. When she came back out, she slammed our tickets down on the table and then flounced away without a second look. My friend was frustrated by this and called after we left to speak to the manager, who was in fact the server, about the issue. The manager/server told her “Get out of our neighborhood” and “you were bad customers.” In my six years working in restaurant service and as a waitress myself, I’ve never seen any of my peers or my supervisors talk to anyone in that way. I have a high threshold for restaurant workers because I understand the challenges of the job and I’m empathetic to the fact that much is out of their control. If this were about the food/price, I would simply never return to the restaurant, but I personally draw the line at blatant disrespect. Not only did she have bad customer service skills, she had bad people skills. Hope...
