Played at Shary Golf Course today for the 1st time in over a year and was quite pleasantly surprised. I've lived in Mission for 15 years and have been golfing at Shary all that time -- except for the past 12 months when I could not play because of fused vertebrae that required back surgery. Throughout most of the past 15 years I have played at Shary only because it's close. I have considered it a pleasant enough course but have regarded the upkeep and condition of tee boxes, fairways and greens to range from dreadful to just barely acceptable. Several years ago more than $6 million was spent on upgrades to the course including redoing the club house and installing a state-of-the-art sprinkler system that was supposed to deliver week killer, fertilizer and grass seed as well as water. That gave many of us hope, but nothing improved very much over the next several year. So imagine my surprise when I came back to Shary after my year-long, back-induced golf hiatus and discovered fairways covered wth actual grass (still a good bit of weed content but that seems to be coming under control) , tee boxes with grass and greens that were on a par with any of the best in the Valley. All of this combined to make my first round of golf at Shary in over a year very enjoyable. I think the changes can be attributed to the course's new director, Mario Flores, who seems to really be interested in helping Shary Golf Course achieve its highest potential. It's not there yet, but it seems to have really come a long way in just the past year. Can't wait to play...
Read moreBy far the most poorly managed course I’ve ever attempted to play in South Texas. Right from hole 1, there were nine kids teeing off together with absolutely no etiquette. After waiting nearly 20 minutes for them to finish, I played the hole but had to skip 2–4 just to get ahead, as the same situation was happening throughout.
I called the front desk to ask if there was a marshal on the course—they said yes, but during the next hour I never saw one. On hole 9, four teenagers literally walked in off the street and started gearing up to play. When I asked, they said it happens all the time because no one monitors the course.
By the time I reached hole 10, where I took this photo, there were twelve carts backed up waiting to tee off. That’s when I decided to quit. I went back to the clubhouse to speak with staff, but the person at the desk was rude and completely uninterested in addressing the chaos on the course.
This place is an absolute zoo. Save yourself the frustration—there are far better options in the area than wasting...
Read moreIn short: fair course, incompetent management. Golf cart availability is "first come first serve" despite reserving tee time days in advance. Waited 30 minutes after our tee time for a staff member to ask if I needed a golf cart. During tee off, I had an older staff member approach me and asked with a hostile tone if I had anything to say to him. Turns out he believed I was part of a golf tournament taking place and took a golf cart out of order. We resolved his communication issue and then he resorted to apologizing many times there after. I reserved a tee time for 3 players and 2 golf carts, however, due to the managements inability to handle the tournament, we were left sharing one golf cart between 3 players. Highly disappointed with the outcome of this golf course...
