⭐ 1 Star – Unacceptable Experience, Do NOT Recommend
I came to this salon today at 4:40 PM with my 10-year-old niece, no appointment, and was told they could take us — but what happened next was beyond frustrating.
After being seated, we waited until around 5:30 PM before anyone started. Meanwhile, they kept accepting more customers, completely ignoring time management. When my nails were finally started, the tech doing my nails was interrupted by the owner, pulled away mid-service, and the owner took over — rushing through my gel manicure, skipping steps (no layering), and applying a transparent color that now traps visible dirt under my nails. The filing was uneven, and my hands now look worse than when I walked in.
My pedicure wasn’t even a pedicure — they only removed the old polish, which I originally had done at this same salon. No color.
My niece had a gel manicure and regular pedicure with two tiny stickers, and even hers were sloppily done. Color was all over her skin, and it looked rushed and careless.
Now the shocking part: they charged me $175. I asked why, and the owner started listing things I never received. After I challenged the price, she "magically" dropped it to $135 — still high considering what we actually got. I was not given a receipt, and I had already tipped in cash before this dispute. Then she handed me a $10-off voucher for “next time” and told me to book an appointment in the future.
Let me be clear: if you’re closing at 6 PM, don’t agree to take someone at 4:40 PM if you can’t manage your time. Don't blame the customer for your chaos. I would’ve appreciated a simple “we can’t take you today” instead of this horrible, rushed, overpriced experience.
And to the massage lady — ask before you start touching anyone. No one likes to be caught off guard like that.
This was my second visit — I came back hoping things had improved. I was wrong. I won’t return, and I urge others to double-check every service listed on your bill — especially if they don’t mention to give you a receipt but that’s on me I should have demanded one . Unless you’re happy throwing money away,...
Read moreI am writing this review with great disappointment. I have been a customer at New Montclair Nails for 12 years. In the past year (post pandemic) the customer service has drastically moved in a negative direction. I have begun to notice the nail technicians and masseuse aggressively requesting tips or increased tip amounts. I witness this on a number of occasion and this behavior left other customer feeling uncomfortable (verbal confirmation). This past week when I went for my regular pedicure and manicure I had a first-hand encounter. After my services were complete and I paid in full, I proceed to tip all 3 service providers. The nail technician (Nicole) held up the money in front of the other customers and stated “You should give me more I need more”. It was not only embarrassing and degrading it was extremely unprofessional. This was not my first personal encounter. A month prior the masseuse who only administer her standard 1-minute message to entice the customer to pay for additional time, felt that she should have received a tip along with the nail technician and procedure to stop messaging a customer and state “TIP? TIP?” as I walked out of the door. After these incidents I reflected on the other customer that I had witness being targeted and the common thread was that we all are similar in ethnicity. In this day and time this behavior is unacceptable. I, nor my family will be a patron New Montclair Nail salon ever again. I hope this statement inspires Mrs. Joy and any other owners to speak to their team about this behavior and become more vigilant about redirecting their staff NOT to harass and marginalize customers. In the community we are trying to strengthen race relations and support minority businesses and this type of behavior adds to the divide. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING we cannot be complicit in the...
Read moreI decided to try someplace new. Although it is NOT the least expensive place I've been, it does provide a great service. I called on an early Sunday afternoon(12:15ish) to ask if I needed an appointment. She said yes and I offered 1:30 and that was accepted. I arrived exactly 1:30 as I had to look/wait for a parking space in lot at the corner (free on Sundays). I picked my color and was sat at a pedicure station immediately. HOWEVER, the pedicure was not started immediately. I waited awhile but Sandra did a pretty good pedicure. I like their approach to cleanliness--plastic cover for the basin and file, buffer and heel scrub one use! I would prefer the choice of that scrubber or the metal one or the tech should know when to use the metal one. I had to wait for quite a bit to get my gel manicure done but there were some extenuating circumstances (Amy's sister was in a car accident). Once it began, there was only 1 interruption but I am satisfied with her technique and although she was having a family issue she remained friendly and didn't rush through but did a great job. While she was massaging my hands, Tony did my shoulders....it was magical. Magical enough that I decided to get a 30min massage. It was quite relaxing, he did a good job, not as magical as the shoulder massage though. Overall, a quiet, serene drama free environment. And...I mentioned that my birthday was the next day and I got a nice hug! She was very apologetic for the delays and thanked me for my patience. :-) I...
