Block Island Trading Company — Local services in New Shoreham

Very rude staff and owner. You’ll see other reviews calling this out. Regular tourist items marked up and very narrow walkaways with stuff jammed on every shelf. Plenty of other great local stores with wonderful owners, this is not one.

While I was looking at something and turned around I barely skimmed a shelf and a plastic piece of “art” fell. I immediately apologized and checked to make sure it was okay. The art and frame were perfectly fine. The corner of it had popped off the frame (hot glue) and they started saying how I would have to pay for that. They can’t fix it, it’s broken and being extremely rude when it was clearly an accident. It just needed to be re-hot glued on the “frame” which isn’t a true frame because there wasn’t even a back. It was $90 so I said I’m not paying for that. Everything is stocked so tightly I barley moved and it fell. It felt like a scam tactic. For all I know it was pulling off the frame before I even stepped in the store. They were horrible causing a scene (talk about great customer service) so finally we agreed to pay $25 for the cost to ship it out to get repaired just to get away from them. But we shouldn’t have paid anything. They admitted how closely packed the aisles are and legally we weren’t obligated to pay anything. A real business has insurance that protects against loss from damages. That’s an everyday occurrence in retail. I’ve worked in retail for many years and damages are built into your business.
