I was a member at this Crunch Fitness location for over a year, and while the variety of workout equipment and classes is impressive, my overall experience was disappointing—especially for the premium price they charge.
The gym is massive, which initially seems like a benefit, but it quickly becomes a drawback due to constant overcrowding. Completing a full workout takes far longer than it should, often due to wait times for machines or navigating through congested spaces.
Cleanliness is another issue. The bathrooms are consistently in poor condition. On multiple occasions, I found them in a state that rivals late-night nightclub restrooms—not what you’d expect from a professional fitness facility.
The front desk staff are hit or miss. Some are friendly, but others lack basic courtesy. It’s not uncommon to check in without being acknowledged, as staff are often preoccupied with personal conversations or on their phones. A simple “hello” or “have a good workout” would go a long way.
Management was by far the most frustrating part of my experience. Canceling my membership was unnecessarily difficult. Despite making multiple attempts to speak with the manager, Nick, I was always told he was unavailable or in a meeting—regardless of the day or time. I made a point to come during his reported working hours (Monday to Friday, 9 AM–5 PM), yet still couldn’t connect. Eventually, I had to involve my credit card company just to stop being charged.
Even after disputing charges, Crunch continued billing me for two months I didn’t attend, including an annual fee. Out of sheer frustration, I paid just to put an end to it. When I finally managed to meet with the manager in person, I was met with a cold, unwelcoming attitude. There was no interest in discussing why I was leaving or offering any form of customer service. Instead, I was charged yet another full month—despite canceling at the end of July—and no explanation was given as to why.
Additionally, Crunch’s top-tier membership package is misleading. Even if you belong to a corporate location, other locations limit your access to amenities like tanning and hydromassage. This is unlike other gym chains (like LA Fitness), where top-tier members receive full access across all locations.
If you’re considering Crunch, be cautious. A gym should not be this hard to cancel, and for the money, the bare minimum should include a clean facility and respectful service. There are better-managed gyms that deliver more value for the same or...
Read moreI’d like to provide an updated review of this gym, which is undoubtedly the best gym on Staten Island. While it lacks a pool, it offers everything else you could ask for in a fitness facility. The gym is well-equipped with a wide range of machines and equipment, making it a great choice for all types of workouts.
As expected with a top-tier gym, it can get crowded at peak hours, making it difficult to plan specific workouts due to equipment availability. However, this is not the gym’s fault, its popularity is a testament to its quality. For a less crowded experience, I recommend visiting in the early mornings or around 11 AM when most people are at work. Evenings, particularly after 5 PM, tend to be the busiest due to post-work traffic and scheduled classes.
The staff is consistently professional, respectful, and welcoming. They greet members warmly and are always available to assist. Additionally, equipment maintenance is handled promptly, typically within 2-3 days. However, while minor fixes are made quickly, some repairs feel temporary, leading to repeated breakdowns until a proper replacement is installed.
Despite its many positives, I have to lower my rating to four stars due to the condition of the men’s locker room and sauna. Unfortunately, the men’s bathroom has a persistent, unpleasant odor that occasionally spreads into the gym. The smell is so overwhelming that I avoid using the bathroom altogether. During the colder months, I even carry my winter jacket and hoodie with me throughout my workout instead of storing them in the locker room, just to avoid dealing with the odor.
The sauna, which I used to enjoy, is also in poor condition. The wood is severely discolored from lack of maintenance, and it appears to never be properly cleaned. Given the high usage, the sauna should be deep-cleaned at least weekly, and ideally, the wood should be replaced. Additionally, implementing a "no shoes" policy would help prevent excessive dirt and sweat from accumulating.
I truly hope management addresses these concerns. If the bathroom and sauna conditions improve, this gym can easily regain its...
Read moreYesterday a male was recording gym members on the gym floor without their consent. He was then seen in the locker room recording himself and other members. My issue however is more with the employee John(male white with glasses greyish hair late30's early 40's). Upon informing him of this I also pointed out the guy on the gym floor to him and said just review the video of the gym floor you will at least see him doing the filming on the gym floor, I then had to leave the gym. Today I asked John the if he talked to the guy about recording in the locker room and the gym floor and he said "yeah he said he wasn't", and then immediately turned his back and walked away. I was very disappointed in his behavior here as he literally could not care any less about a male video recording people in a locker room. I guess since I am not a woman or a minor then why should he care what I say. However since nothing was done here and he obviously does not care this will just allow this individual to do it again and maybe next time it will be a woman or a minor, or a totally different scenario where again this manager wont care and do nothing about it. Therefore someone needs to remove this manager from the location and insert someone not only that will take these matters seriously, but someone that displays a lot more courtesy and professionalism toward the members of the gym. I was able report this matter to the local Police precinct as it is against the law to record in a locker room and they will be handling it from here. I informed John after he walked away from me that it is indeed illegal and if he wont help I will call the Police, which I did. Again he was un-phased. I was informed that no one from Crunch oversees their locations any more not sure if this is true but if so that explains this managers behavior- he has no one to answer to so why bother to try to work in a responsible fashion. At least the Police were helpful...
