New York New York, New York, NY “Amidst the frenzy of image consumption, architecture and cities are compressed into immediately consumable artifacts. We process our world around us through its images and rapidly cross reference them to images that float in the memories of our minds and our phones. New York New York, New York, NY is a response to this reality of artifact image consumption, and the culture of artifact collection in the museums of New York. A one stop shop for consuming New York.” Studio: Architecture of Compression AAD Summer Studio 2023 Instructors: Corneel Cannaerts & Michiel Helbig of Fieldstation Studio w/ Teaching Associate Karolina Dohnalkova @corneelcannaerts @michielhelbig @fieldstationstudio @karolinadoh Student: Aditya Mehta @adismehta #newyork #compression #architecture #design #columbia #gsapp #aad

Fascinated by stone and its different degree of refinements, we wished to device joineries that emerge from their interaction. From the natural rough stone to the most refined piece of marble, each geometry brought with it a unique set of structural properties. We reclaimed waste marble and cut it into prefabricated reciprocal members. stereotomic cuts were introduced to device modular geometries that help stones compressive strength perform in tension. Different stereotomic cuts helped achieve different structural strategies. The slab, the tower, the bridge and the cantilever. Studio: Stone Matters Critics: Yousef Anastas & Elias Anastas Team: Abdullah Maddan, Foteini Kallikouni & Rachita Vishwanath #stone #matters #columbia #columbiagsapp #architecture #aad

Pavilion Parade, Coney Island, NY “The Coney Island of the 1960s and 70s would become known for its high levels of crime, arson, and racial unrest. Moreover, Coney Island lacks any truly public space for its residents apart from the boardwalk and the beach, most of which caters to its five million visitors each year. Pavilions often masquerade as amusement, but they are highly discursive objects of design. Our designs strive to intervene at the nodes at which multiple groups or ethnicities co-exist alongside Mermaid Avenue. Through these “little infrastructures”, equipped with moving parts and intersectional programs, we create space for unprecedented inter-communal interaction. We treat the street as the true leveler of urban space: one which warrants use without force. Through the operatives of distortion, extension, rotation, translation and convergence we transform the sidewalk and adjoining defunct plots to create urban spaces endowed with complimentary programs triangulated to existing ones.” Studio: City Islands AAD Summer Studio 2023 Instructors: David Eugin Moon Teaching Associate: Armita Peirovani @david_eugin_moon @arta_pg Student: Ammar Rassai, Yiyang Liao @ammar99r @theyiyang #coneyisland #newyork #pavilion #parade #architecture #design #community #columbiauniversity #gsapp #aad #city #island
