Salon 601 — Local services in New York

This review is really one star but I’m giving two stars because of how kind, attentive and professional the Asian front desk woman was towards me night of my last ever appointment at this salon. I’d give this place five stars if she ran the place, shout out to women of color who can survive employment by white men.

My real 1 star review is for 2 reasons. First, as a native and local, I try very much to support local businesses, unfortunately not only was I robbed at Salon 601, I was also given a hair treatment I did not consent to- an opalex mask? My hair has not been the same since and for further context this brand “Opalex” is under doing a class action lawsuit since Feb 2023…. Why is this salon even carrying these products still? I digress. I came in for a simple wash and trim… how much? $150 note including the cash tips.

You might think $150, Manhattan? Standard. Wrong. A three centimeter straight trim? Standard straight blow, no tools after. Robbery. Moving forward, I’ll take my chances across the street at the Universal...

I called the salon to book an appointment and spoke to the most rude and disrespectful person ever. I was helping him with the spelling of my name and he kept screaming at me throughout the process and yelled at me saying there is no letter ‘V’ in English and that I needed to figure out the proper spelling and letters of MY NAME. He was constantly speaking to me like I didn’t understand English. Despite being a lawyer and studying at Columbia, I didn’t mind his presumption that I don’t understand English as well as him apparently (enough to not know that V is indeed an English alphabet) but it’s the disrespectful manner in which he spoke to me throughout the call because of this presumption. Since I moved to NYC I have never had such a terrible experience which is extremely racist and disgusting. Why would the salon have such an unpleasant person attend calls I do not understand. I decided not to visit the salon only...

Came here on a whim 2 weeks ago after moving to the neighborhood and boy am I glad I did. Brenda went above and beyond highlighting and cutting my hair. The color is perfect, exactly what I wanted, and she even corrected a pretty bad highlight job from a few months ago. She listened to what I was looking for (natural looking ashy blonde highlights) and really took her time. And the cut? Don’t get me started. It’s probably the only haircut I’ve ever gotten that I like even more 2 weeks after than right after leaving the salon. I don’t do much day to day when it comes to styling my hair and the haircut I got looks good with just an air dry. I feel so lucky. Brenda cut about 6 inches off and gave me bangs, a whole new look, and I couldn’t be happier.
