Review for Stop & Shop – Fenn Road, Newington, CT

This is my second time posting a review about a completely unacceptable experience at the self-checkout area. My original review appears to have been removed, so I’ve also contacted corporate and Stop & Shop headquarters directly.

I’ve been coming to this Stop & Shop since I was a child—literally for decades—and I’ve never witnessed anyone this negative or aggressive working the front end. During a recent visit, I saw an elderly man and woman struggling to find the proper self-checkout lane. I stepped in to help them, and instead of appreciation or professionalism, I was immediately confronted by a staff member who got in my face, rudely insisting that I needed a special “self-checkout gun scanner”—something I’ve never needed before. She then asked me if I worked there, simply because I was trying to help.

Her behavior was disrespectful, hostile, and completely inappropriate for someone working in customer service. Her job should be to be kind, patient, and helpful—not on edge, snapping at people, and showing no respect. If I were evaluating her performance, I’d place her as far from customer service as possible—perhaps in the back, in the produce or seafood department—anywhere that doesn’t involve interacting with customers. Personally, I’d write her up, and truthfully, I’d even consider termination.

Let’s be honest: when you check out, that last person you interact with becomes the final impression of your entire shopping experience. And when I left the store that day, the only thing on my mind wasn’t what I bought or how much I saved—it was the way that woman treated me while I tried to do a good thing.

If I do decide to come back to this store again, I will make sure to record any future incidents and share them publicly. There are cameras, and management has full access to review them. I urge them to do so—they’ll see exactly how she behaved, how she acted, and how unacceptable that kind of treatment is for...

We came up to CT from VA to attend the funeral of a lifelong friend. The visit was bittersweet. The night before our 11 hour ride back home we popped in to Stop & Shop at about 8pm. In VA deli counters are all closed by then. There was a pleasant young man working there 3/4/18. I was in search of Krakus Polish ham. I had not had the delectable pleasure of enjoying it in over six years. They do not sell it down South. I asked, and he informed me that it was in stock. I was overjoyed and ordered a pound. The young man was so pleasant, very much so. Now, to some folks, ham is ham. But not to a Polish woman who was born and raised in New Britain! We packed it on ice, along with Bubs Barbq from Sunderland, Massachusetts, and it all made it home to VA safely. Thank you so much for such a simple pleasure. Our family has truly enjoyed the...

One of the best Stop & Shop stores in the area friendly staff, well-stocked. Easily accessible aisles. One drawback not enough cashiers. Front end manager should be more aware of lines that form at variable times. Obviously there's no signs to this effect of when people check out but at least one more register front end worker should be at his or her register no need to have one maybe two registers open. Most people do not want to do self check. That was a very ill-advised idea that obviously cost the company money to install these units. Rather than pay another employee to be a cashier makes no sense to me. And eventually these self-checkouts are going to disappear. Because not enough people make use of them. Let's stop worrying about the bottom line and let's think about convenience for your Shoppers or they may start...
