Hungarian is a unique, small, and charming supermarket. It has almost everything you need, and is a nice place to shop if your looking for a chill place to shop without the hussel and bussel. They recently have been making smart renovations that are bringing them to the big leagues.
The first change is a really nice and updated wine and spirits collection at the entrance of the store. The area actually makes you feel like your shopping in a winery or a distillery with their wooden floors and shelf's and cherry finish.
They have expanded their store and made an improvement to their vegetable section which can be found on the other side of the store.
They have a lunch special every day that is a great deal. 1 protein and two sides for 12$ is a pretty good deal considering most restaurants charge that and give you less. Where as Hungarian gives you a nice heafty portion. There is even a small sit down area (not marked so you have to find it which is confusing but isn't hard to find).
They have an official sushi corner. Yes, their prices are more expensive than jewel or maybe even Mariano's but, since I haven't tried it yet I cannot speak for it's worth. Their catering options however seem cheaper at first glance but further investigation is required.
They have upgraded their terminals and checkout lines to the 21st century and have made a real effort to have the customer in mind.
All this is what I love about Hungarian. They understand the importance of keeping up with the times and making sure to make customers experience more lux and enjoyable.
Watch out big contenders, this small town store might just give you a run for...
Read moreA few times this year I called to ask if they had any chicken soup. Every time I called I'd get transferred to people who'd not understand what I asked; they'd respond with "chicken breast?" or some other item that isn't soup. Each time they would eventually say a variation of "no, we don't have that".
Last Friday I decided to try again. I called and said I wanted to know if they had chicken soup, chicken stock or chicken broth. The person I said this to transferred me to the bakery and the bakery said I had to call back for the right department. I called back, said I was transferred to the wrong department and the person on the phone put me to the bakery again. I then called for a third time and said I kept getting transferred to the bakery and asked if they could help me instead of transferring me. They said no, transferred me to a line that was a voicemail. I called again, now for the fourth time, and asked if there was someone else like a manager I could speak with and elaborated I just wanted to see if there was an item in stock before I made the trip to the store. They said no manager was at the store but they might be able to help and asked what I was looking for... "soup" I said, and she said "no we don't have that."
I couldn't fathom they didn't have chicken broth. So before Shabbos I reluctantly drove to the store and low and behold... they had what I was...
Read moreHere's why I will be doing all of my kosher shopping at the Jewel on Howard street: I was appalled by the staff's behavior when I tripped over an unsecured mat at the entrance and fell on my hands and left knee. No one came over from the checkout to see if I was hurt or not. When I went to the office to inform them what happened, no one showed any concern for my physical well-being. The woman who was talking with me made a comment about them having cameras to see what happened even after I showed her where the mat was sticking up from the floor. I said that I had pain in my left knee and right hip but no one offered me a chair, an ice pack or expressed any concern. When I asked to fill out an incident report so it would be on file that I reported the fall, I was handed a blank piece of copier paper and told to write what happened on that. I asked the woman talking to me to cosign the paper so my report was acknowledged by an employee and she wrote at the bottom of the page "I don't see nothing" and only signed her first name and initial of...
