I have never been a big fan of the Union. Built in stages over several decades, it is a maze if you don't know precisely where to turn, which hallway to take, or which staircase to use. Parking is a nightmare, and the parking garage itself is not big enough to safely accommodate most cars, even those with sharp turning radiuses. Inside the Union itself there is no escape from the smell of stale or rancid food. The food at all the restaurants is fine, but the smell of fried food from Crossroads absolutely permeates the building. All of that aside, the Union is not without its charms. Beaird Lounge is a nice place to relax, but only when it's quiet. The Molly Shi Boren Ballroom is a versatile but otherwise unremarkable space. Meacham Auditorium harkens back to a time when people dressed up to go to the movies, but now it is fading into disrepair.
