When I was a child we lived on Lawrence Ave in N Plainfield NJ. That was 1 1/2 blocks away from the Vermeule Cemetery, which was located behind a friend's house on Arnold Avenue. It was a lonely deserted place on a little hill with old trees & crumbling. & vandalized gravestones . Some still had readable dates & names so we knew they were very old.... But So neglected & forgotten! Kind of Spooky for kids my age! And there was a lot of Sandstone around the cemetery which was intriguing. The pieces were all different colors & we used to draw with them before they crumbled away in our hands! We wondered how it got there... what it had been used for, etc,... So of course we spent a lot of time nosing around. Just up the street & to the left on Greenbrook Rd was a big old house that always seemed to us to be deserted & we wondered about that too. I don't believe we ever associated the cemetery & the house with the same (Vermeule/ Muhlenberg) families. No one we asked seem to know anything about it, but it has always intrigued me. So it was such a Treat to find the Vermeule Park website & see how Very Much it has changed after all these years!! The cemetery has been restored & the graves identified as Pre- Revolutionary! Very Impressive! So glad to know it is now appreciated & is being taken care...
