I've always been a fan of Kakou Collective's stickers and stationary and would make it a point to visit their booth at local fairs or pop-up markets. Then I saw a post of her burning hats and knew I wanted to reach out to see if she could do a design for me. It was my chance to visit the new shop in Central Oahu at Harbor Center (across from Fabric Mart) and I even returned that same week (my indecisiveness on whether or not to buy something and then deciding I want it after I leave lol)!
The shop was clean and aesthetically pleasing. Stationary and stickers were arranged neatly and easy to browse through. They have hats, coasters, various types of stickers, stationary, and even clothing! EVERYTHING is locally designed and made and includes descriptions of each flower, plant, etc. so you're not only getting something pretty, but you get the background of it, too.
What makes me a returning customer for any company, though, is always customer service. And I am more than happy to share that any interaction I've had with this company has always left me feeling valued as a customer. I was welcomed when I first entered the store by Kea (owner/designer/boss mama) who answered all of my questions about burning designs into a hat and made great suggestions and recommendations. She wanted to make sure I understood how an image could come out different on a hat than what's pictured in my head and I appreciated that. The second time I walked in, there was another wahine helping someone customize their flask with stickers. While browsing I noticed the amount of patience and thought going into the process (cause flasks can be a statement piece for locals like me lol) but she occasionally checked in with me to make sure I was doing okay. I never felt rushed or got the impression that it was ever about making the sale but instead making sure that their customers were happy with what they were getting. I walked in with a design request for my hat and, at the end of the week, left with two jackets, a shirt, post-it/notepad stationary for gifting and not one but two hats! In the end, I ended up with everything I asked for and more and could not be happier with the end products.
I will definitely be returning and preaching to everyone that asks (and even for those that don't ask) about this local and family owned business who care about their customers...
Read moreBack in March I attended my first Kākou Collective workshop, “Brush Lettering 101”. I was a little nervous because I didn’t know what to expect, but the moment I walked in I was kindly greeted by a gentleman who handed me my lettering worksheets and a cute personalized packet full of pens! This was my first visit to Kākou Collective’s storefront (usually I purchase online or at events), and I must say the wooden displays beautifully showcase all the neatly organized stationary items!
As I walked in to take my seat, my eyes were drawn to a certain pāpale on her display shelf, but I reminded myself that I would have time to shop after the workshop was done. During the workshop Kea walked us through basic strokes, skills/drills, and each alphabet. She had a big screen that made it easy to follow along with her. Spending time answering everyone questions, always soo encouraging with her words (when anyone had doubts in the way their letters were coming out). She offered helpful advice, showing us other options on how we can add “flourishes” to our letters. I’ve taken a calligraphy class before (years ago), but Kea’s workshop was different, it was inviting and I left feeling more confident in my lettering skills!
With each conversation/interaction Kea had with others who attended the workshop; there was just soo much attentiveness and connection. She truly cared that you took time out of your day to come be a part of her workshop. After the workshop was done I was able to chat with Kea and we had a funny conversation over my name, and how similar it was to her sister’s name.
Being drawn back to that pāpale, Kea shared some information about it, how it came to be, and how she had just finished it. She suggested that I try it on to see how I like the fit/style. We conversed about color choice, and I explained to her throughout the workshop I kept turning to look at it (as if it was calling my name). So without a doubt in my mind we both knew this pāpale was coming home with me!
I have since worn it on multiple occasions and the amount of compliments/love I received is unmatched!! Kea’s illustrations are truly a work of ART!! I couldn’t be happier to own such a beautiful “conversation...
Read moreI’ve been a loyal patron of Kākou Collective for many years, and I can’t say enough great things about this ‘Ōiwi-owned, family-run business! I first discovered Kea through Instagram, and from the start, her passion for Hawaiian culture, creativity, and community was so inspiring. She is incredibly warm, welcoming, and always willing to share her knowledge. It’s amazing to be able to interact directly with her—whether through her beautifully designed stationery and clothing or the fun, hands-on workshops she hosts.
Trust me, sharing your Kākou Collective shopping haul will make everyone jealous! There’s a reason why people line up at markets just to get their hands on her latest releases. Her work is truly special, and I’ve learned so much from her over the years. If you’re looking for unique, locally made products and a space that fosters creativity and connection, Kākou Collective is an...
