Went for a spaghetti and sausage lunch on Thursday. Very friendly people, and portion sizes are huge, go hungry. I'm a big guy and couldn't finish the meal.
If you're looking for decor you're in the wrong place. It's an older building, and plain tables with table covers. I was served spaghetti and sausage on a paper plate and salad with italian dressing in a paper bowl. I got a real fork though! Which actually punctured the bottom of the salad bowl unintentionally.
If you're looking for service, also in the wrong place. You head upstairs, pay and receive your meal. Carry it to your table(we ate downstairs, and I almost spilled the whole thing cause I missed a step). When you're done you bus your own table(DON'T THROW AWAY THE FORK). So it's more like Fazoli's, not like Olive Garden.
The sausage didn't have any snap to it, which was disappointing to me, and you could tell the main spice used was black pepper(not too much, but if they had anything else in there it was hidden by the pepper). Thankfully, it did cut very easily with just a fork(knife through soft butter easy), I was afraid I might cut through the plate at first sight(and after puncturing the salad bowl). I didn't think too highly of it, but 2 of my coworkers enjoyed it.
The noodles were cooked al dente and were perfect(it's hard to screw up pasta). The sauce was pretty watery though, and nothing special. It had a good sweet tomato base to it, but less liquid, add some garlic and onion, and you'd have a good sweet marinara.
I'm not planning on going back. However, it's not bad, just not tempting either, if someone else REALLY wanted to go there, I wouldn't make a huge fuss.
Huge portion size/cost efficiency just isn't enough to motivate me. I'd rather pay a little more, get a little less, and get something with a bolder flavor, in a more modern building, with...
Read moreGoing to Sons is a tradition for our family. We bring the entire extended family here (have an uncle that's a member) to eat on Fridays many times during the year. They have a bar and simple pasta dishes (really simple, pasta and sausage or pasta and meatballs) but the food and atmosphere are excellent and authentic.
This is NOT a place you have to dress up for (like Lo Sole Mio) and it's pretty casual. I wouldn't recommend it for a date, for example, unless your or your SO have an Italian family. Sons is an excellent place to bring a family, or to meet with friends, in a jovial fashion. We all look forward to going to Sons for the food and time with each other. Haven't found anywhere quite like this before, and I'd highly...
Read moreWhat a treat to enjoy homemade Italian food and Omaha history for an affordable dinner out. It’s a wait line to get your food place but the historical photos on the wall were a slice of Omaha that made the wait got fast. We’ve had Sons of Italy on our dining list for years and weren’t disappointed. The plate of spaghetti was huge, the sauce had a little spice, sausage was tender and the $1 cannoli was the perfect sweet treat. I wasn’t a fan of the salad since it wasn’t my favorite dressing but my husband loved it. And a $5 glass of Cabernet topped it off. Friendly...
