Today (April 12th, 2023), Gallery 1516 told a group of disabled people that they must leave because one autistic individual was stimming. I am a Direct Support Professional who works with disabled people, and we were taking them to see the art with my coworker. An older staff member who I suspect is the owner of the gallery came up to my coworker and I and demanded we leave because this individual was being "inappropriate". The client was simply spinning in circles, which is his way of expressing happiness and is a trait of his disability. When I told the staff member that this was discrimination, he responded with "You can call it what you want, but you can't be here". He continued to say this person was disruptive and that him being there was "inappropriate" because this was an art gallery. We tried explaining his disability, and he insisted we leave. I was SHOCKED, especially as an autistic person to hear him say this. I told the staff working at the desk that I am extremely disappointed, and this is wrong. As my coworker was trying to assist the person with autism out of the gallery, the gallery staff who told us to leave began to record the client. We are EXTREMELY unhappy, and there is no words to describe the evil I have seen today.
Stimming is a very real, and very extraordinary form of self expression for autistic people. He was not being disruptive, there were no visitors besides us within the gallery. This is blatant discrimination, and the fact that this happened during April (Autism Acceptance Month) shows their lack of education and respect towards disabled people. and I am heartbroken that the artists have their work associated...
Read moreAbsolutely beautiful & inspiring space. The architecture is one of a kind, exposed beams and high ceilings offer an acoustic like no other. There are many events to attend and be immersed in the art or sink into some beautiful music by talented local musicians. I have been going to bagels and bach when I can for a few years now - this is such a treat on your late Sunday morning, a truly generous and amazing offering from the gallery! I have heard some new musicians I have since started following after their performances at this gallery and am always inspired and mesmerized by the art displayed. If you have not had the pleasure of experiencing this gallery for yourself, please make sure to add it to your...
Read moreAs a UNO student, this is an amazing gallery I have had to attend for events pertaining to my major. Very clean and spacious, with live events and food provided. While I understand it is something that they cannot control, I believe parking is the only issue I can find. Very limited parking leads to difficulty entering the gallery, especially on opening nights. Otherwise, it is a great gallery that I would recommend visiting if you want to see local...
