Bathrooms are disgusting both in the Amtrak station and on the train. My train just started its route to New York from Miami. I am now boarding in Orlando and departing in Philadelphia. I chose not to use the restroom in the station because it was that disgusting and smelled terrible and decided to wait an hour until I boarded the train to use the facility hoping for better especially since they just started their route. I went to three different cars and all of them are absolutely disgraceful with both smell & sight. Not only do their bathrooms make you hold your breath so you won't gag, but they are a health and hazard issue as well. There is feces smeared on the seat, a puddle of urine on the floor, blood on another seat, a tampon on the floor, a dirty diaper left on the counter and no toilet paper in the one bathroom I finally broke down and used one of the times. My ride is 21 hours. We have stopped at several stations with no time to get off except for Jackson. My husband went to use their facilities inside and stated it was disgusting as well. We paid over $600 for our tickets together, and this was a terrible experience. I wouldn't eat on this train if you paid me if this is the standard of cleanliness the workers find acceptable. This is a safety issue. And don't get me started about the attendants and their manners. One told an 83-year-old woman to lift her own bag on the steps while loading into the car so my husband assisted her instead. Or contacting customer service during our last 20 hour ride from Philadelphia to Orlando after getting no where with the staff in regards to cleanliness and the fact that they were literally baking us to death inside of a car with the heater set on hell. We literally couldn't breathe. My husband and another woman near us needed their inhalers, and two other men were using their cap machines. Everyone was suffering, and they insisted that we stay in our car so we don't get left somewhere else, and they wouldn't open the cafe car for us to sit and be relieved. Absolutely no sleeping on that trip because we were suffocating. And customer service told me they would transfer me to someone else to assist with the matter but it took 9 hours and I missed the chat opportunity when they finally woke up to assist me and they closed out the chat as being a resolved issue I assume. Others in my car who have made complaints were told there's nothing that can be done. There are young children on this train who are forced to use these unsanitary restrooms and it is ashame that the workers don't care and are enjoying meaks together and having a great time while the rest of the paid customers are treated like crap. I was really hoping for an...

Ā Ā Ā Read moreI'm torn giving such a high rating, as it's not completely deserved. I'm writing specifically about the Amtrak Train 97 that I rode from Alexandria, Virginia to Orlando, Florida. The quality of service is fantastic. Robert, the attendant is really nice, and the staff at the stations are also great. The train is well maintained and clean, so five stars all around for that.
The only problem I had was with the food... If it could even be called that. I took the overnight train, so breakfast was in order. I got a coffee and bagel with cream cheese. Let's start with the coffee. Never in my life have I had coffee that you couldn't even smell!!! It was so old and tasteless! I'm fine with paying for instant coffee, if Amtrak wants to stay cheap, but what the hell was that being served?! It's as if the coffee had been exposed to air for weeks on end and lost everything qualifying it as a decent beverage. All it had left of coffee was the color. Truly awful.
Now the bagel with cream cheese. I'm disappointed that the bagel was handled without gloves, but what really turned me off was that it was simply microwaved, which wouldn't normally be a problem for me, but the bagel had the consistency of plastic. Not kidding, it didn't even dissolve like bread normally does when chewed. Every bite just kind of shrank in volume but retained a plastic-like texture. The cream cheese was just what could be expected coming out of a foil packet.... Like liquid white silicone.
So yeah, the food and coffee, especially, was astonishingly disgusting, and it saddens me to see such a low level of quality. I mean seriously, I'd have been ok with Folgers or Maxwell House, but please, Amtrak, fix the coffee! Maybe just give out instant packets with hot water? What I was given was truly unacceptable. I'd ride Amtrak for the service, but I'm going to have to bring my own food and beverage until Amtrak improves on the quality of...
