This company uses predatory billing practices, so please beware.
I joined last holiday season; it was a Christmas gift from my wife. She signed me up for my initial membership and got me involved with the personal trainer program. I decided after my initial free session that I would join the gym and continue seeing the trainer. I updated my account with my credit card information at that time.
In 3/2020, I signed a 3-month delay agreement for personal training due to economic issues related to some medical bills. A month later, I lost my job due to the pandemic. I had hopes that I would quickly be able to find another job. At this time, it was my understanding that my account was in good standing, which was CONFIRMED by my personal trainer. In 6/2020, I was still out of work and had to cancel my personal training outright. At that time, when I signed the cancellation agreement, I was told by my trainer that my account was still in good standing and in fact, I still had some paid-for sessions left on my account! I was reluctant to come into a gym during an airborne pandemic, so I declined these sessions and thought that was the end of it.
Fast forward again to 8/2020. Due to continued economic stress, I was no longer able to pay for non-essential luxuries such as the gym and decided to cancel my overall membership. On the same day, my wife noticed that her card had been charged $56 by Crunch. Confused, we went to the gym to sort out the mess and cancel the membership. At this time I was told by the gym manager that I have a nearly $600 tab with the personal training side of the house, and until that was resolved, they would not cancel my membership and would continue charging me a monthly membership fee.
I asked why I was not notified at any time of this remaining balance. "I don't know" was the response.
I asked why, if this was so important that my membership cannot be cancelled until it is resolved, was I not notified at the time I signed the cancellation paperwork in June. "I don't know" was the response.
I asked why no one in the last 3 months has tried to reach out to me to resolve this substantial debt. "I don't know" was the response.
I asked why it is only important now when I try to cancel my membership. "I don't know" was the response.
I asked how I could have paid-for sessions left on my account at the time of my cancellation if I was $600 in the red. "I don't know" was the response.
I asked why my wife's card was charged when it was not on my account, MY account, which does not have her name or her card information attached to it once I gave them my card info and was told that she was completely extricated from my account (I was assured of this when I decided to move forward with personal training). "I don't know" was the response. We are pursuing this with her bank as fraud.
Once the hooks are into your billing information, Crunch and its team will basically do whatever they want with it and keep you in the dark for as long as possible, only to spring a bill on you when you decide to cancel your membership. Remember, it was ONLY THEN that I owed $600, not when I cancelled my personal training or the 3 subsequent months.
Just look at Crunch's responses in any of the negative reviews here: all they say is "it's clear in the contract..." or "I'm sorry you feel that way" LOL they don't even try to please the customer. They know they have enough legal language in their contracts to cover their predatory practices and are protected from having to please the customers.
UPDATE: look at Crunch's response to my review, then look at their responses to other negative reviews. How many times have they blamed the reviewer for "embellishing" their reviews instead of addressing ANY of the issues? I never said that I didn't owe anything. My issues are how this info was never relayed to me, staff not being able to answer any of my questions, and fraudulently charging my wife's card. How many times can you blame the customer before you realize the issue might be you? This...

This gym is at it again, perpetuating this lie that you have to come to the gym to cancel your membership. They even have clever language constructed about the agreement. They're now telling my 19-year old son, who's away at college, that they won't cancel his membership and that his parents have to go to the gym to cancel on his behalf. Ludicrous. The word shady comes up quite a few times in the reviews here. These are questionable false business practices all designed to discourage cancelation. Don't succumb to their lies and deceit.
Itâs a pandemic and Iâm not comfortable going to the gym. Iâm a cancer survivor and prefer not to be in a place like that. So, I tried to cancel my membership, multiple times. I chose not to cancel it right away wanting to invest in a local business, but, finally this fall decided I needed out of my membership. I emailed back in November and in early December. Nothing. So, I called the general manager and was told I have to come in person and cancel or send a certified letter. I was told that itâs policy and she wouldnât make an exception regardless of the pandemic or my concerns. Itâs policy, she said. I guess sheâs never heard of electronic signatures.
I decided to read the contract I signed 2 years ago that I'm being held accountable to. Turns out, she was wrong. The contract says NOTHING about cancelling in person or certified mail. In fact, it just says it has to be in writing and that you only need 10-days notice. See the contract language below.
I feel duped and taken advantage of. This âpolicyâ is all about discouraging cancellations, not about treating the customer with compassion and empathy. Those qualities engender business and brand loyalty. Holding me to an unreasonable and unsympathetic policy does not.
I encourage all of you who are frustrated about the cancellation policy to read through your contract and hold this company to some integrity of practice.
NOTICE OF INTENT TO CANCEL. The notice of cancellation from the consumer shall be given in writing and shall also terminate automatically the consumerâs obligation to any entity to whom the health studio has subrogated or assigned the consumerâs contract. ADDITIONAL CANCELLATION TERMS. Excluding the 3 business day provision to cancel on the front of the agreement, and the BUYERâS RIGHTS above, Member cannot cancel within their first 90 days, after 90 days you are required to provide a 10 day...
