In August, I took my father's jewelry to ABC Pawn to see what it would offer. I also inquired about the alpaca earrings in the attached photo. My grandfather brought them home when he worked construction overseas and since I'd been holding onto them for decades, I figured they had to be worth something. Donovan told me they were junk. I took them to another shop and got $481 for them.
After taking my father's Navajo jewelry into a back room, Donovan came out saying he'd been given permission to "pony up" and make a "strong offer" that wound up being $886 after he weighed the silver. I declined, knowing my father had spent $500 on the cuff alone. I took the jewelry to three other shops where owners warned me not to "get screwed" because, although they couldn't take it because of the bear claws, it was valuable.
After 30 days passed and the $886 offer expired, I needed to take a pet to the vet, so I took the jewelry back to ABC Pawn. Donovan conferred with the owner and I was offered $687. I left.
In a jam, I took the jewelry back today. Donovan's on leave, so a nice gentleman who seems to be new helped me but conferred with the owner.
"I have a vague recollection of this coming in before," the owner said. "She didn't like the offer and left."
I interjected to clarify why I didn't like the offer (I.e., that it was $200 less than the previous offer) and the owner walked the jewelry to a weight scale without even looking at me.
As he weighed the silver, Scrooge McDuck flat out said the jewelry was "worth well over a thousand dollars" but it was the holiday season, so the shop would be offering less than the previous offers.
Imagine using Christmas as an excuse to screw someone. ✝ 🎄
Needing the money and unable to get rid of the jewelry any other way because of animal cruelty rules (that I'm perfectly fine with), I walked out with $440 -- HALF of the original offer.
As I signed the form, the owner told a customer that he sold something to that he always appreciates 5-star reviews. What a prick.🤣
Having read other 1-star reviews, I'm sure the owner will reply with some BS about customers saying anything to disparage a small business owner's business. 📢WHY would anyone do that? Competitors, maybe. Customers, no. Attitude matters, guy. And I am against greed even more than most folks. Enjoy the money you make from my father's jewelry. May you meet the same fate as the bear(s).👍
Editing to address the owner's reply: Holy deflection, Batman. Do you think before you reply to people who review your shop? No, seriously: Do you hear yourself? Where do you come off telling me -- or any stranger -- to pick myself up and create the life I want blah, blah, blah...? I graduated summa cum laude as an English and communication double major; I have a 760 credit score and, if you looked me up on LinkedIn instead of making wild assumptions, you'd see I started a National Dogfighter Registry for free as well as a slew of social media accounts to warn people about the likes of the heathens in my Angelo McCoy petition.
As for the rest of your rant, I notice you didn't address the 17k gold llama/alpaca earrings that nearly wound up in the garbage.
And as for markets "changing," I took gold rings that I showed to Donovan to other pawn shops. I sold them piece by piece over the course of three months. Guess what: Despite the diamond market fluctuating in favor of lab-grown diamonds, the same shop offered me the same amount for those rings each time I went in. In fact, the owner gave me a little more because, unlike you, he genuinely is out to form relationships with customers who may send him more business.
I don't drink coffee; nor do I have a dog. (Another one of your assumptions based on the word "pet" in my original review.) And I have no intention of "blowing off steam" to someone who, as I said in my review, didn't even look at me when I was there. You were the one who retaliated because you didn't like the fact I snubbed the other two offers. So, your shop got a lengthy, detailed...
Read moreUpdated review: Came in today to retrieve my pawns and unfortunately had to deal with the same individual who stated that they weren't going to support my so called drug habit anymore. NOT THE PERSON I WANT TO BE LOOKING AT. I viewed my pawn ticket online and interest shows not due until July 11 on one and July 16 on the second one. So I came with the exact amount of principal to retrieve my loans so I NEVER WOULD HAVE TO STEP FOOT IN HERE AGAIN. Now I am told there's more due than what their software showed. They refused to work with the situation that THEIR SOFTWARE shows conflicting information. AND HE HAS THE NERVE TO COMPLETELY DENY THE COMMENT HE MADE FROM MY INITIAL VISIT which follows this update. I've had to stand in here and literally BEG SOMEONE TO CASH APP THE EXTRA MONEY SO I NEVER HAVE TO COME IN HERE EVER AGAIN.. AND THE OWNER HAS YET TO APOLOGIZE FOE EITHER HIS OWN OR HIS EMPLOYEES ACTIONS...now here's the original incident.... They had always been a great place to go and be treated fairly and with respect. It's funny how one interaction can destroy a person's opinion permanently. I want to clarify that this has absolutely nothing to do with the denial of the pawn transaction, it is STRICTLY based on interaction, rudeness, lack of empathy and more so than anything the fact that Donovan had the nerve to say, "we aren't here to support people's drug habits". How dare you! My father had just passed away and I was simply looking for a $40 increase to take a Greyhound to his funeral services. As I stated and will restate this review has absolutely nothing to do with the denial. John accosted me verbally TWICE during this interaction. Stating that I was trying to make him out to be the bad guy. He walked away stating he had to think about it, just left me standing there. He returned literally reprimanding me for even approaching him with the request. Then threw it up at me that my birthday was a couple days away as well like I was "playing sympathy cards". I hadn't even mentioned that my birthday was approaching. He then stated he didn't want to talk to me anymore and again left me standing there dazed and confused. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SPOKEN TO IN A PLACE OF BUSINESS LIKE THAT! And to have another employee insinuate I was a drug addict and they weren't there to support a habit. I had been dealing with this pawn shop well over 10+ years and always had a good rapport with everyone there. BUT THAT DAY DESTROYED ALL THAT PERMANENTLY. They burned the bridge and lost a loyal customer. Again this is about the behavior not the pawn denial. I will retrieve what I have in pawn as quickly as possible and never ever step foot in there ever again. Their usual empathy, compassion and professionalism just went right out the window that day. They do give fair pawn pricing but don't catch them on a bad day or you'll be left dazed and confused just like I was. And Donovan you've got a lot of nerve making a comment like that! And did it while he was waiting on another customer. Now what do you think that customer's opinion of me would now be. Bridge burned, loyal customer of 10+ years GONE. And I will be checking my items extra carefully upon pickup for fear of retaliation for this review....
