Disappointing Experience at Costco Checkout
I'm compelled to share a recent disappointing experience at Costco, which has left me reconsidering my membership. After completing our shopping and proceeding through checkout, my elderly mother and I were heading towards the exit when we were stopped for a routine receipt check—an expected procedure at Costco. To our surprise, the employee discovered that a box of bleach bottles had been inadvertently left unscanned, sitting unnoticed at the bottom of our cart. It was clear that this oversight happened during the checkout process, involving both the employees who handled our items and the cashier.
The staff member at the exit pointed out the missed item and suggested we return to the checkout to pay for it. Under normal circumstances, this might not have been a significant issue. However, given that I was assisting my elderly mother, returning through the busy store presented an inconvenient challenge, particularly to rectify an error we had no hand in creating.
In an attempt to resolve the situation swiftly, I requested that the item simply be removed from our cart, highlighting that the mistake was on Costco’s part as they managed the checkout process. The response from the employee was unexpectedly defensive; she insisted she had not made a personal error. I had to clarify that it was a systemic oversight by Costco, not her individually. This exchange was discomforting and made us feel wrongfully implicated in the oversight.
While I understand that errors can occur, the way this situation was handled lacked empathy and customer care. We left feeling frustrated and significantly inconvenienced, tarnishing our otherwise regular positive experiences with Costco. Effective customer service should prioritize quick and compassionate resolutions. Sadly, this was not our experience, leading me to question the value of my continued patronage...

Read moreWell, it's Costco! The employees are generally helpful and always very friendly, which is a positive contrast from most other businesses in South Texas.
This Costco's a little unique though. Lots of (wealthy) people ("fresas") come up here from Mexico to make big purchases of the essentials, including things that are obviously for huge events or businesses. So get used to multiple carts blocking the aisles, somewhat rude and either unaware or indifferent customers not caring that you're trying to shop, too. Also, most of these particular customers are either aloof, dumb, or completely unaware/indifferent that they act as "check-out line tampons." They'll have a 10-minute long debate in Spanish about whether they needed the season salt and the 5 gallon buckets of nacho cheese while they wave around dozens of $100 dollar bills that they just took out of their Dolce & Gabbana handbags. Just so that you're well aware that they are VERY important people. 🙄 Espero que lean esto por completo.
Three stars because the cart situation in the parking lot is highly unattended, mostly due to the aforementioned customers leaving their carts to ding and dent other customers cars..."what's that you say?! There is no manservant to service my every fresa need, so you expect I, of all people, to place my cart in the proper location?" Sí, le hablo a usted. ¡Presumido! The cart attendant is seldom found anywhere.
Also, this Costco seems to be slightly less clean and maintained overall than others, and also lacks the lighting that most other Costco...
