Awesome! That is the one word that describes my experience attending the Basic Handgun Course on Saturday, February 4th with Virgil (primary instructor) and Skylar. Both Virgil and Skylar are former Marines had have years of experience with weapons. I would consider myself to have intermediate minus knowledge of shooting (grew up around weapons, served in the military and have shot off and on for many years). I’ve taken a couple of professional, private lessons but this was by far the best training I’ve received! The professional environment, course materials including slides and handouts, the delivery pace of the presentation and overall welcoming feel created a very positive and comfortable experience. After the classroom portion, we drove to the range (about 15 minutes away) for the live fire portion. The tips, techniques and positive comments - coupled with their patience – resulted in considerable improvements I made during the range session. “Slow is Smooth and Smooth is Fast”  I appreciated the high emphasis on safety that was emphasized throughout the day. I had my Foundational Handgun class with John Asbury yesterday. As a first time gun owner and a CCW holder, my gun sat at home for weeks from the day I got it because I was uncertain on how to be a responsible legally armed concealed carry. I was not comfortable carrying because I also recognize my skills and knowledge were very limited when it comes to handgun and/or being a CW carry . I appreciate Arizona Home Defense and certainly John for making me feel at ease during the whole class. The one to one teaching and the feel that John gave of just like hanging out with a buddy sharing pointers made it more enjoyable and easier for me to learn . Thank you John for taking that uncertainty away and teaching me how to have confidence in respecting my tool the right way, to have better basics in marksmanship, and the proper mindset of being a legally armed citizen. After the class, I have been carrying without the uneasy thought and feeling that once prevailed over me whenever I inspect my gun. I have taken two courses with Arizona Home Defense and would not want to take firearms courses with anyone else. I had never touched a firearm in my life but wanted some experience as I will be going into law enforcement in the next 1-2 years. I figured I might as well get some experience before going into the academy. I can confidently and proudly say that I have left each course with more confidence in my knowledge and use of firearms. The one-on-one environment is perfect as I felt like the instructor could pay attention to what I needed to work on. I have had John as my instructor for both of my courses so far and am very thankful for his knowledge, experience, and encouragement in my practice on the range.
