Let me preface this with I’m the color of condensed milk and NOT the kind you’ve put in the crockpot and turned into caramel. I’ve visited Hispanic grocery/meat markets my entire life because I love cuisine from South of the US border, any culture really that packs flavor into food. I’m not in my home town and decided to search near Chiccarònes I’ve been craving. Looking at Supermercado Mexico I decided to take a chance because the reviews/stars were good. NOW! I’m a caregiver, I don’t ask for special attention and am patient and forgiving. Everyone has bad days. I’m sorry if today people did. I parked, walked to the store as I see a man outside selling something and greeting each visitor warmly. Really I don’t want a sell’s pitch so his ignoring me worked in my favor. Once inside, I was left at the deli counter as other customers were helped, customers that came after me. I’m not hard to miss either at 6’3”. I was finally greeted in English and gave my order in Spanglish because I’m practicing with my aunt to become more conversational. Conversation broke down when I asked if they make tortillas in house and if the sell warm tortillas. I was quoted $3 for a few tortillas. I asked again if they made homemade tortillas, do THEY make them, (I’m still unsure). Again I’m told that tortillas are a few for $3, but this time she also tells me that 20 tortillas is $4. I roll with that and walk away with my goods. The cashier was the nicest person today. She said hi and asked if I wanted paper or plastic. My Guacamole was very good. A solid 5.5/10 while my chiccarònes were dry and tasted like they were cooked in burnt oil. A 2.5/10 and didn’t satisfy the craving. I’m still on the hunt for a good Hispanic Market for when I’m in the...
Read moreThis place is absolutely amazing. As a Latino from the Bay Area I was a bit shocked but not surprised, after a few hours here in PDX, to not find one decent Latino market in Portland proper.
After doing a quick google search, I came across this place and it did not dissapoint. The place is top notch.
You first walk into the carnicería off to the left with almost any cut of meat and seafood you want. Some meats are already marinated which helps for making last minute asado. They also have many pre made salsas which were extremely fresh and pre made sides such as tortillas, rice and beans. Unlike many carnicerías I am used to, they take their cleanliness seriously (gloves and plastic bags when handling meat) and it shows in this area and around the whole store.
Everyone there was also super nice welcoming this particular Saturday morning. If you are a Latino and looking for some Latino food or groceries, come here. It is worth...
