Needed more time to explore store. I've never heard of Rural King stores and after getting a circular in my local paper, I had to check them out. At the Beckley location, I found employees to be friendly and helpful. Prices are comparable to TSC and other like stores. Some items are less, some more as expected. I love the selection of chicks, much more than TSC and lower prices (except for the ducks). Excellent wide variety of items, I was very surprised at the selection. I only got to explore a small portion of what Rural King has and it was quite impressive.
Update: I'm not very impressed with the live animal section. I've gotten chicks there twice from a discounted mixed bin (1.50 ea.). Sign listed breeds that were discounted so I asked for certain ones. First time I thought I got 3 New Hampshire Red and 3 black Australorp pullets, well they were all pullets but after a month or so I realized I had 1 New Hampshire Red, 2 Amberlinks, 2 black Australorps and a Cuckoo Maran. Next group of 6 was 3 buff Brahma's - 1 died after a few days, 1 never grew after 4 weeks and died several months later, the other is quite small for a standard size Brahma. The other 3 all were supposed to be Barred Rock pullets, well I ended up with a Cuckoo Maran rooster and 2 silver-laced Wyandottes (1 died after a few days also). The staff isn't very knowledgeable about the chicks the sell, some don't even care about them or their wellbeing. I've been in there looking at the chicks only to discover multiple dead ones or near death and multiple with pasty butt. When I told the one young male employee, he said he'd have to get someone else over it and took off with his buddies who came by (guy was on the clock) and never returned. 20 minutes later, still no employee to deal with things so I found a stock person who immediately took removed the dead ones then placed the weak and sick ones in a box, taking them to the back where the kept other sick ones. There were 5 dead, 2 nearly dead and 7 with pasty butt, that was just in the hour I was...
Read moreThis needs to be fixed, immediately. The animals are completely neglected not to mention the employees know literally nothing about them and their needs. I went in three days ago to purchase a rabbit, my Californian Rabbit, Ghost, needed a partner. My cousins had gotten two rabbits a few months prior and had warned me that the employees knew nothing, but I still wanted to give it a shot. I get there and after finding the rabbits I'm shocked. Let's start with their environment, Wire Cages. Perfectly fine, BUT the bottom is also wire creating a huge problem.
Why is this bad? Rabbits can and do develop something called "Sore Hocks." Google it, very bad for their feet. Not to mention they can get wounds from putting their paws through the cage and yanking it back, which is what happened to the one I got. I adopted a young 8 - 10 week old black rabbit, at first i noticed nothing, but upon further inspection I see a wound on his front leg, specifically the right one. At this point it's infected and will need to be regularly cleaned and he will need antibiotics.
This wasn't the only problem, sadly. When i was adopting the rabbit, the employees couldn't even tell me the gender nor breed. When I say they knew absolutely nothing, I mean it. And when we called to complain, the worker (( Jessica )) was rude, saying things like "Get another one." - "It's just a rabbit." Little regard for his life.
It's so simple, educate your employees, get break boards (literally just untreated wood for the bottom or hell a proper cage.) And make sure you're not selling a sick animal. This is beyond messed up and I refuse to ever go back because of this. Leading me to, DO NOT PURCHASE...
Read moreOkay considering gun sales, I definitely give a big thumbs down. I am editing my comment because today I went to pick the gun I had on layaway for MYSELF up.
I had called my mom that mind you is watching my two young children an hour away from this location, while I waited in line. I didn't talk about buying guns or any of that sort. Anyone who uses a phone while out, you look around at things while you are talking, right? Again, I didn't mention anything about guns. Didnt even mention that I was looking at their inventory behind the desk. I was asking about my children and what they were doing and making sure she knew I made it there safely.
Well I hung the phone up because it was almost my turn , he came over and asked me "who was that you were on the phone with" I told him and he said "well I can't sell you a gun because you were on the phone, unless you have her come here to have a background check done and then you can if she passes". EXCUSE ME? The firearm is for ME and ME ONLY. Reason I'm there picking it up since it IS in my name for the layaway. There are NO signs or laws saying I can not call and check ON MY KIDS WHILE IM WAITING IN LINE.
Gun sales I give 2 stars. The rest is for the other parts of the store.
You all have lost a costumer and a few others that have seen my post so far on how ridiculous this was, and pretty sure illegal to be saying what he did above in quotes for my mom.
Waisted time....
