Kindred Hospital Chicago Northlake — Local services in Proviso Township

I want to give honor to those who made my stay at Kindred not be scary. #1 place goes to Alex-CNA, he made me feel at ease, comfortable since day #1 I had him as my CNA. He never made me feel like I bothered him, never made me feel like I was one more task he had to complete to get his day over with. Any time he was in my room, whether it was seconds or minutes, he always paid attention to my concerns and needs and met them. Eyes dont lie and he truly is compassionate and empathetic. He deserves to be the best CNA in Illinois, Kindred and the USA. I will give an example of how awesome he is; I felt a burning sensation on the female private area, and I saw a little blood on the purewick sucking tube, he listen to the concern, and found the spot and saw it was spot bleeding on the lower right area, he let the nurse know so she can call wound care, (side note: wound care came after a while but were dismissive I was telling them the same thing I told Alex and they just kept talking amongst themselves, and said I don't see anything its not true, and I was trying to explain where the bleeding was coming from but again they zoned me out and left. They dont bother to explain, plus they are rough upon touch. Its a man who wears black scrubs and tall, female short and navy blue scrubs, totally different from the wound care employees who I saw the day of my alleged discharge, which is Jocelyn and Toby, and I thought I was leaving so when they asked how are you, I replied happy to ho home. They could have walked out or become dismissive, but THEY DIDN'T, instead they were attentive, made me part of their outloud thought process, of my issues. They showed true compassion and didn't see me as a task to check of because they could have walked away, oh she is leaving so who cares not our concern anymore but I was seen as a human with needs.

Now, Judy-CNA, I will forever be grateful she tought me to push myself and stop having limiting beliefs of myself because I am capable of more physical activity and mobility regardless of my weight. She is awesome. I really like how she gives the full body bed baths. She paid attention to my needs and accommodated accordingly. Physical & Occupational Therapy are THE BEST IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE. The fantastic trio, Paige, Kevin, Gino. They made me feel alive, the made light of any situation, and regardless of the hurdles they found ways to humor up. They are the perfect balance, Gio he is very observant and sees ahead a time what can happen and is ready to act. He is patient. Paige-she is the best cheerleader and patient, great sense of humor, well all 3 do in their own unique way. Kevin-he is nice too, I appreciate how he had an eye to know what one is capable to do and was gentle about it, he would say, how do you feel doing this or that, I think you can do it, he was not pushy and he made me feel comfortable that it was okay to take breaks and listen to your body without feeling ashamed. Nurses whom I appreciated each for different reasons: Victoria-she always explained what she was going to give me or do. Respectful and she always paid attention to my concerns. Evelyn-she knows how to make you feel comfortable in bed, she always makes sure before she leaves without telling her or reminding her to leave call light, table, your phone and charger if you have one. I looked forward to her full body bed baths because she knew what she is doing what products to use for what. Made me feel safe. They do not deserve a single star whatsoever! My review is long but 100% Honest. Please read all of it! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD & YOUR LOVED ONE, DO NOT ADMIT YOUR LOVED ONE THERE! We did not know we could do unannounced visits to locations before deciding on one, I so regret not being informed of that. Please do unannounced visits to locations and ask many questions. UNFORTUNATELY we admitted My Mother into Kindred based on distance for family n the supposed good reviews. After the nightmare that we witnessed and experienced, there is just no possible way that the good reviews are real! People writing them I'm willing to bet, haven't even been patients there! and they should be sued for false advertisement! We should have read the bad reviews because everything bad that each bad review mentions we experienced it ourselves. All of the staff there should be ripped from whatever titles they have! This goes for all of them from administration to nurses to Doctors! My family and I would voice our concerns with obvious signs of things not being right and they would down play it! You assume that they know their field, but on the contrary even Doctors and nurses from other locations tell me that we don't need to be in the medical field to know that things weren't right when I show them the pictures of Kindred's horrible negligence! My Mother was there after suffering a brain hemorrhage, on a Monday she literally bled from an eye that obviously looked infected and the "infection nurse" said "it doesn't look like an infection and that it looks way worst than what it was", eye doctor didn't go in until Wednesday and it turned out to be a bad infection, her antibiotic didn't arrive until Thursday. I can go on and on about much more negligence that occurred, but it's way too much to fit into the review! The incision on My Mother's head was very swollen and very red, then she oozed out pus, and then she started draining liquid and even including the so called Doctor agreed with all the other idiots that it looked like a superficial infection on the outside of her head and not the inside they wanted us to wait to do something about it, long story short my sister and I were able to arrange for her to get transferred back to UIC, the infection was soo bad inside her head that a 2 hr. procedure turned into a 6 hr. procedure, Thank God it didn't reach her brain because if it hadn't been for My sister and I getting her out of Kindred she would have...

WARNING TO FAMILIES OF LOVED ONES THAT CANT COMMUNICATE!! Initially I was pleased with the facility and care provided to my husband on the HAU unit. The respiratory and speech therapy was great! My husband came in with the expectation of weaning from the ventilator and trach decannulation was accomplished within the first week in a half of his stay. He was a finally able to speak after 2 months of communicating by hand gestures and writing only; needless to say our family was elated however , things went downhill very quickly thereafter. Once my husband began to speak more often the nursing staff seemed to grow irritated and impatient with him. Ignoring his calls for help, telling him that he talks too much and silencing him with narcotics despite my wishes to have mental status altering medications discontinued due to the massive brain stroke that my husband was being treated for and the misuse observed by my husband, requesting the narcotics to put him to sleep. The narcotics and anti anxiety medication had my husband so confused that my daughter found him naked and sleeping when entering the unit for a visit. With the exception of one nurse, no one seemed to know how this happened or even cared. There are a couple of good nurses but the majority have bad attitudes and lack bedside manner. Same with the unit clerks, for every good one their are several horrible ones. I witnessed very unprofessional behavior from staff including arguing, yelling, screaming and cursing amongst each other with visitors present on the unit as well as sub par care to patients. I am very grateful for the 1 or 2 nurses that took great care of my husband and treated him with kindness, compassion and respect as well as the ancillary team members..social worker, doctors and therapy teams. As a former nurse, I can confidently note that as a whole, the nursing department can benefit restaffing from the TOP down. Please plan on CLOSELY monitoring and involving yourself in your loved ones care if they are being cared for at this hospital specifically in the HAU unit as I can not speak of any other unit at this facility. If your loved one can’t communicate, you may plan to sleep over as often as possible. My husband was made to feel so bad for achieving such a huge goal that he often told the staff, “ I am really a nice guy” and “ but I am a patient” when he was dismissed by nurses complaining that he wasn’t their only patient.
