I went thru quite some good and bad experiences with furniture purchase and wanted to share our experience for whatever it is worth.
Refurbished entire home over past 3-4 months, in the process visited quite a few stores. There is lot of mis-selling in this business. After the entire experience, I believe best stores can be identified when some thing goes wrong rather than when every thing went well. Hence this detailed review with contrasting experiences.
Flemington Dept Stores : Had quite an unique experience, sales people are hands-off, you need to ask them for help (some cases, help was less than desired), ended up buying 2 beds and 2 sofas...every thing is custom furniture - wood species, finish color, upholstery, arm/leg styles etc. Rates were very competitive & not much of bargaining. They have accommodated my request of delivering furniture as they are available without holding them up, 1 bed was delivered ahead of schedule (4 weeks), 2nd bed was delivered little late (7 weeks ) ; for sofas, fabric i selected was out of order and had to make a 2nd trip for selection (i would have definitely appreciated if they found 1st time itself). Sofa's were delivered after 6 weeks, felt finish of the sofa was not that great (welt piping was not aligned straight, few staples are visible etc), called the store, a technician has come over to check and accepted the deficiencies and gave us few options - repair with some discount, re-order or full refund and gave us a week to make a decision. Went ahead with full refund as I did not expect these issues from flexsteel brand. Ordered a different brand now.
Good : store was prompt with follow-ups ; there is absolutely no pressure during the entire cycle of transactions, were offered to change or cancel the order couple of times. A place I would definitely go back as well as recommend for anyone looking for furniture
Bad : Little help from sales person on the floor ; They hand off the transaction to different departments/people along the way...so, initial sales person is invisible once the order is placed.
All brands furniture (Rt 22) : this one was completely on the other side of the spectrum. Lot of mis-selling. Sales person sold us on Vaughan-Bassett saying it is solid poplar wood & 5 yr warranty (reality : made of invented wood/word called "wood solids" & 1 yr warranty. Upon insistence of store manager, i had even written to the manufacturer to check & they claim it as "wood solids")....and that is only the starting point, as I learnt it is not solid wood & returned to the store less than 24 hrs (ordered on Sat 5 PM/called the store at 11'ish on Sun & back in store by 3 PM for cancellation) requesting to cancel the order.. Now, the manager repeats the same BS....SOLID WOOD & order is already placed, he has to check to cancel it. Meanwhile, i went ahead requesting my CC issuer to block the payment. Store manager disputes it for restocking fee, and I agreed for a store credit (their own store policy on web site says - "You may cancel your order without charge. If the order is for a custom item, cancellation must be prior to production."). Now I really wonder if they got to production in less than 24 hrs on a weekend :-)
And the BS continues, Store manager claims Store credit can only be used for his store. I lost my cool, gave him some honest feedback before he agreed for store credit that can be used at other allbrand stores.
Good : Pricing is competitive if your buying a branded furniture and you know exactly what you need
Bad : Mis-selling, Zero customer service (more of customer rippoff), no service or dispute resolution mechanism. If anything goes wrong, you are at the mercy of store manager...they have a chain of 3-4 stores...

This was the first time (November 18, 23) I ever went to Flemington Department Store. I can't believe I waited so long!
I needed a sofa asap and was in awe when I walked in the door! I wish I could remember who I spoke with on the phone the day before. He informed me of the amount of acreage of the store (so I would definitely find what I was looking for), delivery fee (none) AND! NO TAX NOVEMBER!!! He also mentioned no one would follow me around the store. That's a nice thing. This conversation helped me to decide to not go to the other places on my list. My chiropractor suggested Flemington Dept. Store as well.
I went with a friend and we had fun! I think Juan said hello first. I told him what I was looking for and he confirmed we were in the right area - and there were a couple more areas. Items in stock are labeled (there are a lot!) so that helped me tremendously.
When I had a question, I could easily find someone.
Fast forward - making sure I missed nothing, it was down to 2. And the one I chose - I would have picked whether in stock or not.
John was in the area this time and talked to us a little more about the choice, warranties which Juan had mentioned as well. Checkout was simple (delivery scheduled for 6 days later) and after that, my friend and I went to the Carhartt section! Oh, this store has so much, I wanted to stop and look some more.
Delivery was fantastic! I got a call the morning of with a 2 hour window.
Stephen and Troy were fantastic - I live in a 3 floor walk up. I felt awful but Stephen was very kind and just said the right thing (he did the cc payment in my apt. etc.) Stephen was professional as well. Still, that's a tough delivery.
Also, if I have ANY problems, I can call the store as opposed to the manufacturer. That is so reassuring.
I'll be buying a new bed at Flemington Department Store- the next thing on my list.
Do not hesitate to buy from Flemington...
Read moreThis store was running a large sale when I came in declaring all clothing 20% off. I find an item that I had intended to order online but was hesitant because i was unsure of the sizing. They have a "Carhartt Rep" in store that knew they didn't have my desired color in stock she still allowed me to try on some coats in order to find the perfect size. I inquire about pricing and and given the same price plus an additional 10% off for being a public servant. I thank her and return the following week once the jacket arrives. Only problem is the rep I dealt with hasn't responded to emails and isn't in the store when I arrive to drop off patches and pay for the coat prior to it being sent to the seamstress. The coat rings up for almost $40 (edit closer to $30, my mistake) higher than I was quoted. I politely informed the cashier of the quoted price when she rolls her eyes and tells to the owner who's running the price in some computer. Flustered by my inquiry and baffled by my request for them to honor their quoted price, I was told that if I could get a better deal somewhere else that I should go. So I did. I understand that mistakes happen but when your employee makes that mistake, you need to own, it and man up.
Update: the owner messaged me on another platform then proceeded to call and harass me several times. He huffed and puffed and attempted to intimidate me by threatening to call my employers and threatening legal action... lols. I posted pics of his message to me.
Update: came in for some work items on a purchase order (my employer places company orders for uniforms here) staff was unorganized and unsure of which items were included on the order... shocker! More attitudes, more incompetence, more of my time wasted. However, in Marty's defense he stepped in and cleaned up the mess made by his lack luster employees....
