This Market Basket has great prices, lots of prepared foods (e.g. sandwiches, sushi, ...), and a huge variety of products. But unfortunately, I cannot recommend it. I have been here many, many times, and have almost always left in a bad mood.
It's always extraordinarily crowded, no matter what time you go. It's crowded to the point where you almost can't use a shopping cart; there simply isn't any room. If you try and beat the crowds by going early, you'll just encounter the employees stocking shelves with huge pallets, blocking most of the aisle. These huge pallets, combined with the other customers, makes it impossible to maneuver down some aisles.
Since it's so difficult to maneuver a cart in the grocery-store equivalent of rush-hour traffic on I-93, you sometimes need to stash your cart at the end of the aisle while you run over to grab something. It's always so chaotic inside, you'd think that a category 5 hurricane was perpetually barreling toward us.
They're often out of carts and handheld baskets, you may have to wait a few minutes for an exiting customer to drop one off.
The produce section is very hit-or-miss. It's better than some of the other grocery store options in the area, but it is by no means perfect. On my last trip, they only had around 10 green peppers left, and they were all borderline rotting. If this ever happens to you, you can always buy the more expensive but pristine-looking organic produce in the same area.
The shopping experience is stressful. You can't leisurely browse the food... you need to swoop in, grab something, then do some acrobatics back to your cart. You can't stand anywhere for more than a few seconds to look at a shelf without several people trying to push past you with carts. You can tell other shoppers are stressed as you shop; people getting visibly annoyed with the congestion and lack of space.
Checking out can take upwards of 15-20 minutes. Even with all of the registers open, each line is often 3-4 full carts deep.
The parking lot is as crowded as the store. With the amount of traffic, the exit intersection is extremely difficult to pass through. They need more exists, or traffic lights and a new traffic pattern.
Their prices are great, but I'd rather spend extra money to patron a less crowded...
Read moreI have been going to this Market Basket several times since it opened. I work part time and I usually go there after work in the late afternoon. The store is clean and well stocked with very good prices. My concern is that it is usually very crowded, which is great for business. This is not the fault of the employees, but the customers who practically run into you with their carts. I wish they would be more considerate of their fellow shoppers. Most of the employees are helpful, with a few exceptions. Two years ago I was at the produce area and a worker came very close to me pushing a large piece of equipment. She said " I could murder you with this." Her exact words. I spoke with a manager who said her shift was over and he would speak with her. I didn't get a follow up response. Another time in the produce area there were three male employees who were standing around talking and laughing. I asked them to move so I could get by and they just stayed in one place and laughed at me. Yesterday I was in the area where the smaller beverages are, a young man in a black sweatshirt was trying to get by and he was pushing a large piece of equipment. He didn't stop, I put my hand up and asked him to stop so I could get through. Then he stopped and had this blank expression on his face, did not say excuse me or offer an apology. There are other markets nearby that aren't as crowded and I will be shopping there from now on. Maybe I will try the Reading location. Food shopping should not be a...
