I do not enjoy going to this store. Why can't they train their cashiers how to work more efficiently and with a sense of "urgency" for the customer's sake? Run the belts to bring the grocery items closer to the cash register so that people in line can save time by putting their items on the back of the belt. Here's another suggestion, the cashiers could use both hands; one to grab an item, pass to the other hand as they swipe/scan and place in the bagging area, reaching back for another item. (This is how they do it at Kroger, or Target). Every time I go to this Meijer store, the cashiers just use one hand to grab an item, turn the item around to look at it, scan it, talk with the customer, then reach across themselves to place the item in the bagging area to the left, then reach back over to the belt with their one hand, and repeat this process. It is agonizingly slow and inefficient. On another visit, a produce item was in the wrong place on the shelf (it looked similar to another item). I pointed this out to the produce clerk, and he said they were out of the item I was wanting to buy. I suggested that he might want to put the wrong item where it belonged with the proper label (to help keep other people from buying the wrong product), but he just shrugged his shoulders and walked away. On yet another occasion, I asked a person by the front entrance for assistance, and she told me to go up to the customer service desk. So, I walked over to the desk to ask a question, specifically where an item was located. I stood there and waited several minutes (with no one in line in front of me) while 2 people behind the desk were having a personal conversation. Not once did anyone acknowledge me, or say something courteous like, "I'll be right with you." When they were done talking, the woman closest to me finally turned to me and asked if she could help me. Frequently, the grocery cart I get does not roll straight, and many have wobbly wheels. Please, service your carts. I have to wonder if the store manager here even cares about what goes on in this...

The store seems more affected by "Supply chain issues" than some of their competitors. They have also narrowed their selection of items, things that I used to buy at Meijer, I now have to go to other stores to get.
Their self checkouts are inconvenient and difficult to use, not intended for people who buy a large amount of groceries. For example it seems impossible to input a quantity of the same item, say pet food cans. No one wants to scan a tray of 24 identical cans when there is a delay programmed in between scans to prevent multiple, accidental scans.
They are slow to open new checkout lanes, often the line for the one or two open checkouts extends back into the product shelves, with the majority of those waiting having full grocery carts. They will open an additional lane eventually, but it seem like they are having to pull someone off of another job to do so so it takes time.
On the upside, the people are friendly and helpful, the store is clean, the selection is generally good and includes some unusual and difficult to find items in the cheese and packaged deli meat areas. Produce is generally fresh and diverse. Looking overall at Richmond grocery stores, Meijer is the best of the lot, but they have room to improve. I would think that they would want customers to not feel the need to go elsewhere for anything, but most weeks I need to visit another grocery for something, often something that there is a space for on Meijer's shelves.
Edited 8-22-25 Increasingly there are brand name items that I cannot get here, while the shelves are full to overflowing with a Meijer brand equivalent. Today I did a small grocery run to supply for the weekend. There were only twelve items on my list and five of them I were...
Read moreWorst Meijer store ever! Ordered my groceries online, not the first time they sent me rotten produce but the watermelon was so rotten it filled the bag with watery liquid, wasn't even juice any longer it was that spoiled and soft. They ran my card too many times so with reserving the funds 4 times payment was refused. Found that out after getting home and calling about my card. Was told at the store when they cane out to load the car that I needed to give them another card. Was very confused why they sent me a text too pick everything up. If it wasn't paid for.
They went inside with my card. After getting home and putting things up there were missing items. Found out later they took everything to the register and rang it up and forgot some bags. I noticed the items cost way more than my online cart. Funny! The items they forgot took my discounts away. Ended up costing me way more than the total before the missing items. Wich was more than the cart was before the 20 plus out of stock items!
