Can not say enough positive things about our experience with Casa Del Sol and Jocelyn!
My husband and I signed up to take the Novice Beginner course after returning from our honeymoon in Mexico. We thought it would be a great chance to learn for future visits and help us at our respective jobs. I looked around for a place to learn and really liked what I saw of Casa Del Sol and Jocelyn from the website. I liked that once we completed one course it would be easy to keep going in one place and with one teacher.
I emailed with Jocelyn and she was extremely responsive in getting us set up for the class.
Jocelyn does a fantastic job of making learning a new language accessible. She is so friendly and positive it has made an intimidating process feel like fun. As someone who was nervous to be in a classroom setting and having to speak out loud Jocelyn has made me feel comfortable along with our encouraging classmates.
Between the class and the extremely helpful handouts and "homework" it has been amazing to see the growth in myself, my husband and our class. Jocelyn does a great job of mixing things up to keep your brain working and also teaching the core language of Spanish to make it make sense to a native English speaker.
The classroom setting has also bonded our group. Between working out problems with each other, learning how to ask questions to each other in Spanish, and encouraging each other we have a great group of Spanish learning cohorts.
Jocelyn does a great job of keeping us on track and making sure we are learning at a good pace, but also being go with the flow. She has the patience to answer every question we have and steer us back on track.
I highly recommend Casa Del Sol and Jocelyn if you want to learn Spanish in an encouraging and fun manner.
We are almost done with our Novice Beginner course and will be continuing on to the...
Read moreIt's hard for me to express how big of an impact Jocelyn and la Casa del Sol has had on my life. It goes way beyond simply learning Spanish, although I have definitely learned a ton in that regard.
Jocelyn combines modern language teaching techniques with deep Latin American cultural knowledge to create a highly accessible and culturally-focused learning environment. La Casa del Sol is one of the only places in the Twin Cities that offers group, in-person Spanish language classes for adults. This is important for me because I feel better prepared to engage with native speakers, which will almost exclusively be in-person interactions for me, and it fosters a sense of community within the group. Through la Casa del Sol, I have reclaimed lost Spanish language skills from high school and learned much more about the language and Latin American culture.
Beyond the cultural and language education, my participation in la Casa del Sol has also helped me be a better person in general. After about a year and half of working with Jocelyn, I have found that I am much better at small talk, and far more comfortable and interested in getting to know strangers. Previously, I dreaded these types of interactions. Further, this class has helped tremendously with my mental health struggles. It has helped me build confidence and maintain a positive self image. It has provided a safe space to push the boundaries with my anxiety. I don't even need to take meds before class anymore. Lastly, la Casa del Sol has helped me forge relationships with people that have extended beyond the classroom. Some of my classmates attended my thesis defense and I've stayed in touch with folks that have stopped taking classes.
Overall, I would strongly recommend la Casa del Sol to anyone that is considering taking Spanish lessons or just looking for a community to...
Read moreOn Casa del Sol's first trip to Mexico City on a quiet rainy morning I was thinking about how special this Spanish class is, why I am constantly recommending it and why I stay. It is not just to learn Spanish; there's a million apps for that these days...although, I do believe that taking class with Jocelyn is probably the best place to learn. The main reason I choose to learn at Casa del Sol is because of the community. A community in which we can be vulnerable and open, explore our deeper thoughts and ideas and connect with one another in Spanish and English. These are not classes where we just pretend we are ordering food or learning to name objects but where we are learning to put a second language to what is in our hearts and that is what is truly pushing me to keep growing in my Spanish journey. I am beyond grateful to have found Casa del Sol and to have met Jocelyn. I am beyond grateful to be a part of such a diverse community of learners and I am certain that what we are doing together each week is so much bigger than learning a second language. I am grateful that Jocelyn continues to follow her dreams creating space for this amazing community. So, just know, when you arrive at our table for your first class, we will embrace you as family. You will gain a community of truly amazing people while also having a blast learning Spanish! I'm looking forward to...
