Attention parents of nervous littles who want their ears pierced: I see you. I am you. My daughter has some sensory issues and any type of pain is epic to her. I was really worried about how I would get her ears pierced, knowing that she would need to take it slow and feel comfortable with the process. I’m here to tell you that Sydney, the owner of Gifts On Parkway, is an angel on earth. Saints walk among us and Sydney is venerable, blessed, and worthy of full sainthood. We went last Saturday to learn about the process at Sydney‘s invitation, so we could come back another day and get the piercing done. Once my daughter saw an older girl get her piercings and have an easy time, she decided she wanted to go ahead and get hers done. Sydney did an amazing job of helping her get comfortable with the process- feeling the marker, feeling the cleaning wipe, trying out the piercing chair, being comfortable with the piercing gun tickling her ear, and eventually getting ear number one pierced, but that is when all heck broke loose. My sensitive little sweetheart didn’t realize what the pinch would feel like, and she was very hesitant to get the other side done (meaning she probably woke up sleeping college students across town with her screams). We walked the store. Sydney showed her around. They looked at different items that were for sale (so much cute stuff!), my little picked out a stress ball to squeeze for the next piercing, and we got calmed down and ready to go to the chair. But then we needed to go from the chair to the floor, and Sydney went with her. Then she needed to go to Mom‘s lap on the floor. Then, of course we busted the stress ball, and Sydney was so patient and cleaned it up. We had to circle the store some more, and by this time it was almost 2 hours after the store was supposed to have closed. We decided we were just going to leave, and we went to the car but had regrets, and came back and sat on the sidewalk. After that, my daughter decided she was brave and would go ahead and go back in and get the other side pierced. Sydney was waiting to lock the door so we could come back if we wanted to get it done. Another 30 minutes, many tears, and no second piercing, and we decided we would come back another day. Sydney kept the other earring for us along with items my daughter had picked out for when she got the second ear done, and we came back the following Friday to continue. Sydney was so kind and so patient. It took another 2 1/2 hours, one of which was after the store technically closed, but Sydney again got her used to the chair by finding her a couple of distractions to concentrate on (I highly recommend watching the laser wood engraving process to find your Zen), and then Sydney finally got my sweet scared girl’s consent to pierce the other side. Now we have both sides done, and I cannot recommend Sydney enough for getting children’s ears pierced, even the ones who are excited but super...
Read moreQuite possibly the closest you can come to a Hallmark movie experience. If you are like my wife, and love those shows, you have to visit this gift shop. As I browsed all the unique gifts, the clerk had the most wholesome conversations with each of her patrons. They talked about personal events in people they knew. It was very endearing to see and hear. When I bought some little earrings for my daughter, she made sure to ask me my name, and referred me by it throughout the rest of our interaction. By far the most personal experience at a gift shop I've...
