I've heard about OT for years, often losing my running partner for weeks at a time to random OT challenges. I already have a gym membership at the local Y and truly hate treadmills, why run like a hamster in place when a 10 minute treadmill run feels like an hour outdoor run? And rowing...what in the world is that machine? Finally though, after fracturing my shoulder in October (while running outside) and a couple months later losing my mom to complications from a fracture/osteopenia, I was in a fitness funk and decided I needed a change and had to focus on getting stronger. Plus, who could resist the good January deal? The first day on the weight floor I couldn't find any weights below 8lbs. Gosh, all these OT folks are super strong I thought as I did the upper body exercises without weights. Later I magically found that OT does have baby weights (tucked away by the big heavy separate weight rack) and have been increasing my weight ever since. All of the coaches (Justin, Thomas, Cory, Josh) are extraordinary - supportive, encouraging, fun, and patient plus the rest of the staff at OT South is also amazing. I clearly have no coordination and have the attention span of a gnat at the crack of dawn but between the coaches demonstrating each of the exercises and the handy follow along screens, it's hard to not understand what to do. Now there are more individual strength classes which have been great. I can't say that I love the treadmill yet but the atmosphere and variety makes the treadmill run go by really fast and I love that you can work at your own speed/pace. It's been about 6ish weeks or so since I joined OT but I love it. If you're on the fence, its worth...
Read moreAt OTF, you had a dedicated treadmill, a dedicated tower, and a dedicated weight rack. The workout is never the same and workouts are a combination of strength power and endurance. There’s no “competition” so the workouts are designed to do what is best for you. All sizes and shapes are welcome. Everyone is supportive and if you want to be left alone you’re left alone. If you want to engage that’s there too. The trainers will get to know you and work with you in a safe but challenging way.
I’ve done the whole sign up for big box gym like Crunch and LA fitness and find the vibe just oft-putting. While I pay a premium at OTF I know I never have to fight for a treadmill or spot and people are there to work.
The app is cool in that you get to track your results. You wear a HEart rate monitor (this is how you get your “splats”) and you can track your progress and see your average heart rate, treadmill distance, row distance, and also benchmarks like the 2000m row, or 500m row.
First workouts are free and take it form a non athlete if you are looking to get into shape this is the place for you.
P. S. The music can be a bit loud. The new studio has a mega sound system. I bought some cheap ear plugs and...
