Visiting this place in the fall time is certainly a nice experience, the friendly owner will help you to select between many hand made chocolates and sweets, I haven't tried the sweets but judging by their chocolates I think the sweets must be the better option.
They place offers a good and seasonal variety, in nice packages fit for a treat at home or gifting, and the prices are mid-range, with a pound of chocolates at $19.
The real problem is the quality of Chocolate, I come from a family of three generation chocolatiers, and we specialise in creations out of high quality Belgian chocolate, so I have to admit my bar is high, but still I was able to know that the base chocolate used is american not Europeian which as a start is not a very good sign, but the bad ones were the little chocolate rounds that clearly tasted of a cheaper substitute to cocoa butter made from hydrogenated palm oil mostly, this cheap chocolate taste means that this chocolate wouldn't even pass the requirement to be labeled as chocolate in most of Europe, but rather as chocolate flavored candy! on the other hand, the nuts used in the cholocates were all very tasty which is a bit rare in affordable assorted chocolates, and the recipe's used are good, the looks are good, and some of the choices are real chocolate that taste better than a Hershey's bar, so my recommendation is to ask to taste before you buy from here, and buy only what you've tasted because it is a hit and miss thing, but don't go for assorted.
Overall, I wouldn't choose this place if there were any competition around, but as expected in a small touristy spot one doesn't have that...
Read moreMy mother grew up in Newburyport mass and always loved and raved about willey's candy shop (previous ownership). She always shared stories of going to Salisbury beach during her younger years and always going to willeys. As we grew up she always got candy during different holidays for my brothers and I. It was definitely a treat we always loved and I started buying during holidays as I got into my adulthood for myself and different friends and family on the holidays. The candy and fudge was better than any other place I've known and we would drive an hour from our current location to purchase this candy. Everytime I came in the staff was extremely friendly and had a pleasurable attitude to customers. Since the new ownership the taste of the candy isn't the same but still okay for a candy shop but I haven't felt the same kindness when coming in. I went in today with my husband and I felt like the young lady who served me had a very blank personality and seemed like serving us was inconvenient her. I wasn't to happy with the customer service but there was another lady out back who helped a different customer and she seemed very pleasant towards a lady who came in for some service on bridal shower favors. I'm not quite sure based on my last couple of visits that I'll be traveling an hour to this candy shop anymore. Maybe it will get better as time goes on but this is no longer the willey's my mother and I...
Read moreI've been coming to Salisbury beach since before I even turned 1. Willey's was a staple of every vacation for most of my life. Unfortunately Swell Willey's leaves me longing for the days when I would be greeted by Bill upon entry. The new owner has made some very weird choices. For one, it is infuriating to walk in wanting to order both ice cream and candy only to be told for the sake of a ridiculous formality I need to go to the outside window to order ice cream, forcing me to pay for everything separately. Secondly, Swell Willey's claims to be established in 1913. Don't let this lie fool you. Swell Willey's was established long after this. Swell Willey's did not establish anything and instead purchased a name they hoped to ride off of. Sadly for Swell Willey's long time customers can easily see the dip in quality. The most important and unfortunate dips in quality are the fudge, chocolate, and taffy. These 3 things were once staples of Willey's but trust me this is no longer the case. The fudge's consistency and taste are not what they once were. The chocolate lost something in the flavor department and I find myself sadder with each bite. Finally, the taffy is a sad excuse for the masterpieces Bill once produced. Instead of trying to appeal to a younger crowd with peppy vibes how about focusing on quality of the products that once made...
