After I spent too much time waiting in line, I wasted more time trying to find hummingbirds in this exhibit and had to ask the volunteer about their absence. I was told there were no hummingbirds because when they had them, they would constantly fight. You have world bird experts in behavior working at the San Diego Zoo yet they somehow didn't expect hummingbirds would brawl in an enclosed space like this. Any non-educated person who feeds hummingbirds in their yard can easily observe their territorial nature as they constantly fight over sugar water even if resources are plentiful. How did anyone overlook this? Instead of hummingbirds now, they only have colorful birds that are mere substitutes that vaguely resemble hummingbirds. We have about a dozen hummingbirds in our backyard and although they chase each other around they still manage to drink from one of the feeders with 3 to 4 hummies at the same time. Another exhibit in Tucson has over 3 dozen hummingbirds which was amazing to see. So the zoo should really consider adding a lot...
